I have a new Savage 12fv in .223, I fired about 7 monarch .223s (not 5.56) through her, and after cleaning it, I keep seeing what looks like oxidized copper coming through on the patches. I am using Hoppes #9, a wire bore brush for the first couple of strokes, and I have used at least 7 patches, and they are just as dirty as the first!...Is this normal? My Mark 2 has MANY more rounds through it, and I only had to use the wire bore brush, and 2 patches for it until the patches would exit the barrel cleanly.

look for a product called "wipe out" it is magic! i bought a rem 740 and let the product sit and foam over night. 24 hours later there was a sticky blue pool the size of a quarter that had oozed out the barrel- its amazing how much copper will build up!

Any commercial copper solvent will take it out.

Hoppes makes a good one.

Be aware that ordinary old Hoppes #9, or any stronger copper solvent will remove the copper in a bronze bore brush too if left to do it's dirty work.

Nylon bore brushes are best used with copper solvent so you can tell if the copper on the patches is coming out of the bore, or off the bore brush.

I've used Shooter's Choice copper remover with good luck and just to make sure I give the bore a bit of JB Bore Paste, bore comes out looking like a mirror. Shooter's Choice has a high ammonia content so watch your nose.

I have used over the last 15 years; Sweet's 7.62, SHooter's Choice, Butch's Bore Shine, Wipe out, 50BMG, and some other Ammonia based Copper solvents.

The KG-12 is more than 10 times better.
No stink.
No Blue
No fooling around with brushes
No foam leaking all over the gun
no fooling around with electrodes
no waiting

Read the whole 2 pages to find my influence:)

You could also just use some Windex. The instructions that came with my friends amazingly accurate Howa rifle touted Windex as a copper remover.
