(This thread is not about whether or not a barrel needs to be "broken in")

I will be firing the first shots from an acquaintances ar-pattern rifle, due to his current storage situation at home he's "lending" it to me and told me I can have at it with regards to shooting it, sighting it in, getting familiar with it (have never shot an AR before). Yeah I guess I am getting shafted with the initial labor but to be honest I actually find the first stages of a new gun (cleaning initially, testing ammo etc) to be the most fun.

I plan on following a shoot one round / clean / shoot / clean until the barrel stops collecting copper. How long do copper solvents take to work? I will be using Montana extreme copper killer. The reason I ask is because some solvents say let sit 30 minutes - I can't imagine the people doing these barrel break in procedures really spend upwards of 20-30 hours just to fire their first 100 rounds with cleaning between every round for 20, every 3 for 20, every 5/10 etc. if they are waiting 30 mins in each cleaning process just for copper removal? Or can you brush and take it out after a minute or so?

if it's a chrome-lined bore, i probably wouldn't spend a lot of time/effort on break in

if it is a good barrel (bartlein, krieger, etc) chambered by a good smith then it will probably stop copper fouling in the first 5 rounds or so

if it's neither, then i'd shoot more rounds between cleaning

But I'll be doing the same thing on an unlined centerfire barrel of my own soon so the question regarding how long people let copper solvent sit during break in process is still relevant.

Clean it. Shoot it. Clean it after your range session. Repeat as necessary.

They aren't bolt guns, and the break-in process yo've outlined won't be advantageous.

Honestly, unless you have high round count sessions, you don't really even need to clean it after every outing. I clean mine because if I ever have to grab one of them, I prefer it to start off on a clean slate.

It's a chrome lined Daniel defense barrel

Don't waste your time. While I always do a break-in routine with my new precision rifles, when it came time to do my new FN SPR with it's chrome-lined barrel, I was not able to get even a hint of copper when using Montana Extreme's fine product.

Why would a chrome barrel have to be broken in? It is very hard and maybe after 1000 rds it might be "broken" in. Some standard barrels you would spend years before the rounds left no copper in the barrels in between shots. Waste of time and more damage can be done to the bore by that very excessive cleaning. Bore foam is the best anyway

Wipe-Out foaming bore cleaner plus the accelerator can get most of the copper in about 15-20 minutes

Does Daniel defense recommend breaking it in?

If not, I'd skip the break in bit.

Bushmaster recommends firing "a couple hundred" rounds through a new chrome lined barrel before cleaning to break-in/polish the chrome lining.

Shoot it, have fun, no need to clean between each round on a chrome lined barrel.
