Removing copper from bore?

I have a Remington XR-100 that has significant copper in its bore. I have cleaned it every time I have shot it to try to remove some of this.

I have tried Remington products (RemOil, BriteBore, etc.), Hoppe's 9 Bore Solvent, and even Breakfree CLP.

This copper is only noticable if I put a borelight down the muzzle.

Anything I can do to remove this?

If I don't remove it fully, will it inhibit accuracy?

Copper Solvent.

Any number of good products are on the Market. Just follow the directions to the letter as some of them contain high concentrations of ammonia and can harm a barrel if left too long.

Yes, it needs to be removed, or it will continue to get worse until accuracy really goes to pot.

RemOil = Great for oiling, but it is not a cleaning product at all.
Breakfree CLP = Great for powder fouling & oiling, but not copper.
Hoppe's 9 Bore Solvent = Great for powder fouling, but not copper.

I think an obsession with copper is an internet myth, personally. Unless you're competeing in benchrest. But if you accuracy has dropped substantially, it's something to try. I've had great luck with KG12, on the rare occasions I use it.

I repaired a Browning BAR 7mm Mag a couple of years ago that was key-holing bullets!

Nothing at all wrong with it except a severe case of copper fouling!

It shot MOA after a good cleaning with copper solvent.

A little wash color on the lands is normal, but a lot is not going to shoot worth a hoot!

Thanks RC, I think I'll try some of that Hoppe's bench rest. Does it too contain ammonia?

Also, most of the copper (95%) is in between the lands, not on them.

I'm not sure but it probably does. Ammonia is almost the universal copper solvent.

Just follow the directions and you will be fine.

Keep at it until you stop getting blue cleaning patches, then clean normally again with Hoppies #9.

Folks run into trouble when they leave the more aggressive copper solvents set in the bore over night.

HOPPE'S #9 BENCHREST COPPER SOLVENT!!! And read the instructions and follow them. For hard caked on copper let your firearm stand, muzzle down, over night with Benchrest in the barrel. Then swab it out in the morning...

The Barnes CR-10 works very well. It better since 90% of their bullets are solid copper.

IF YOUR CAREFUL you can use household ammonia. Plug the bore and fill it. Just don't let it set too long. I have read the military will do this on severely fouled bores. I have used this myself with no harm done to the rifle.

Bore Tech's Eliminator is great for copper. It works as well as most ammonia based products, without the ammonia.

i've used Sweet's for years with excellent results. just remember to oil it lightly when done as the ammonia can be corrosive.

I've tried it and the Break Free's version and it's outstanding in terms of ease of use, safety and effectiveness.
It's a foam that distributes evenly in the bore.
