Title says it all. Which one will keep me from making an "Elmer Fudd with a carrot in the barrel" if I shoot slugs? Also, does anyone know where to find an 18-20 inch barrel to switch out for home defense duties? Seems like all I can find cost 75% of a new gun. The receiver on this shotgun is an 870 Express Magnum. 1992 vintage. Thanks for the help.

Cylinder choke....which is no choke at all, is best. You can fire slugs through Improved Cylinder too.

If it is a home defense gun I'd use buckshot...not slugs. If it is a deer gun...get a rifled slug barrel and bring that baby to life.

870 Bbl Source

Mossberg sells add on bbls for rem 870's

Check;) Mossberg website.

Any choke can work safely, but the open chokes usually give better results. Cylinder, Skeet or IC are good places to start.

Some of us have found good deals on barrels in the for sale sections here at THR. Other sources include the bulletin board at ranges, gun shops etc.

My favorite all around HD/Deer barrel is the iron sight 20" Remchoked barrel. Versatile and effective.

You should be able to find, with careful shopping, a used barrel for 25%-50% the cost of a new 870 Express...but that's the downside of buying the cheapest gun in the line-up....seemingly high prices for barrels/parts....still far cheaper than most rifle barrels...Harvey Broome frequently has ads in SGN/GL/GD for multitudes of shotgun barrels....Dave spoke the truth with 870 barrels....other guns might be a different story....I've heard of more split muzzles on Remington 31's, Winchester 12's, and Ithaca 37's in full-choke with slugs than I am comfy in recommending such for slugs... even though my old 37 Full would shoot Fosters like a rifle....

I've actually found my 870 express to be most accurate with Remington slugs and an IC choke. Winchester slugs were a close second, but only when using a Skeet choke. I suspect every gun is a little different.

Remington Slugger Slugs are made slightly oversize achieve a better seal against the bore, supposedly.

I use sluggers in my 1965 870 Wingmaster using a modified choke with good results.

Actually, just about all my shotguns have modified chokes and do pretty well with slugs. I've used full chokes with slugs with no ill effects, but mainly I'm using modified.

+1 on the modified choke. I used to shoot a lot of three gun matches so I tried every choke I could screw in my 1100. Best accuracy was with an extended modified choke. Cylinder bore chokes gave lousy accuracy in my gun,, but yours may vary.

Forster type slugs are way under sized. Measure one if you doubt it. Ones I have measured are .700 to .710. 12 gauge nominal bore size is .729.

I shoot my Rem 870 Wingmaster with skeet barrel, also my Rem 870 Express with open choke, with equal success. Buckshot, Slugs, also game loads are accurate.

ive had very good results with rotweil slugs and an improved cylinder
