How are your experiences using CorrosionX as a lubricant?

How does it perform compared to other lubricants regarding longevity, cold- and warm-weather performance etc.?

Works very well as a rust cure/preventative. I'm leery of using it as a lube - that wasn't what it was designed for...

Sort of expensive for that too. :)

I used it on my Bullseye guns, a Ruger MkII and a Kimber Polymer Gold Match. It's really too thin and is blown off too easily; the VERY thin coating that is left is easily gunked up. I think that it works better as a cleaner/preservative than as a lubricant. I still use it to clean my guns, letting a fouled barrel soak for a day or two makes it much easier to get clean; whether it's lead, copper or just powder residue.

Well, 3in1 oil advertises that it's OK for guns too. :) I tend to want to stay with stuff designed strictly for guns.. Breakfree, Tetra, Eezox, etc., etc...

Thanks for the input!

Al,
I see your point, even WD40 claims to be a gun lube... ;)

CMcDermott,
which lube(s) do you prefer?

CorrosionX recommend their SpeedX for a high end gun lubricant, in addition to the "regular" resp. "For Guns"- formula, FWIW.

For lubrication and corrosion protection esp., how compares CorrosionX to FP-10, any experiences?

Hey Quick, my bad - welcome to THR! I didn't catch the new member status. :)

IMHO, your asking a pretty tough question. To get a real answer, one would have to test a couple guns very throughly and extensivly for differences to show them selves. Frankly, it would take a bunch of rounds to get enough wear to make measuring possible. Second, you'd need at least one gun (same brand) for each lube. That would be pricy. :)

That's another reason I use stuff designed for guns, not all purpose hydrocarbons. :D

Hey Al,
You’re most welcome, thanks!

You did figure this out by my peculiar inquiry, I suppose? :D
But in fact you got me there, wouldn't mind to have some of the nicer guns in pairs for testing lubes, do you know a sponsor? :D

Being kind of a lube geek, like most here I suppose, I'm constantly interested in this topic, albeit I have to admit that experimenting with different lubes can have its downsides, too.
In this context I think one isn't doing anything wrong sticking with something that works for him, like 3in1 Oil for AUTIGER04 :)

Anyway, I just ordered some FP-10 and CorrosionX, so let's see!

I gotta agree with Al.

Now I did some T&E at one time, 20/20 hindsight I wish I hadn't.I could have bought a gun, holsters, ammo...etc. I mean the gun specified stuff I'd always used for close to 40 years never failed I think it depends one's enviroment , me for instance I'm not around salt water...I do have to be concerned with humidity in summer. Winters can be cold and wet. RIG worked since a pup.

Heck I'll tell you how much I worry , I gave all of my lubes and solvents away I had won, collected and had been given to me. Umm, oops, I didn't leave myself any. I ordered a 1/2 gallon and a buddy took it for a project. I ran by my gunsmiths, "hey I'm stealing this bit of lube and the half bottle of solvent". That's all I have at the moment. I did find the small tub of RIG Grease ...been using it since I was a wee brat.

:D - nope. Look under your name on the left side of the screen - it tells how many posts you have.

Al,
that's the other way to notice it :p

re1973,
I basically agree with you and Al, but once in a while I get bitten by the vampire and try something new, but as stated above, I had the incident's I wish I hadn't!

Thanks for your statements, guys! :)

Right now I am using up a bottle of good old RemOil, it still works well. In the future I plan on trying Militec-1, supposed to be a "dry-lube" that doesn't collect dust or powder residue and gunk up the gun. Seems to be working in the middle East for the troops stationed there.

CMcDermott

I just stopped using Militec-1.

It worked fine for me as a lubricant on moving parts and on sear contacts it did an exceptional job in some guns; after using it a while there was indeed some reduction in barrel fouling noticeable; I would never use it anymore for corrosion protection, especially not in an environment where this would be a concern.

After considering the pros and cons I found about the product, I don’ trust the manufacturer’s claims any longer; I too would stay away from the heat-applying procedure, in my opinion it bears more dangers than it would do any good.

I just got a bottle of CorrosionX. As a lube, it seems to be just fine. Pretty slick in my opinion. In fact, this stuff seems to be slicker than Militec1 (oil and grease) and many other lubes. A 4 ounce bottle is pretty big, and you use so little of it, I suspect this stuff should last a long time.
Works great as a cleaner - tested that out today.
Works great as a lube - tested that out already today.
According to product literature, it is evidently awesome at preventing corrosion too...
As far as gumming up... I didn't get any of that today and I was trying. Testing done in windy dusty conditions that pretty much gum up everything.
It smells different. It feels different.

I like it.

While I have no experience with CorrosionX let me weigh in on two other products mentioned in this thread.

First, FP-10. I've used this for awhile and it's an outstanding lubricant, a decent cleaner, and from what I've read, works well to prevent corrosion. It's a better cleaner than BreakFree CLP, IME, but I still prefer Hoppe's for cleaning. I don't live in an especially humid area so I've never really had rust problems on my guns, no matter what I coat them with. I just ordered another bottle of FP-10 from Midway.

I got a free sample of Militec-1 oil and grease. Both are very good lubes. They are not intended as corrosion protection AFAIK, and the oil has performed poorly in such a role in one or two tests reports I've read. Interesting note, though: Benchmade Knives specifically recommends Militec-1 oil to lubricate their folding knives. It works really well in this role, since after it dries out it doesn't act like a magnet for pocket lint.

I look forward to seeing a detailed review of CorrosionX.

For what it's worth Petroleum Helicopters uses CX on the helicopters flying in the Gulf of Mexico. ( they would buy something else if there was anything that worked better )
That salt air is hard on machinery.

As far as a gun lube it seems to work OK.

The only thing that worries me about it is the possibility of it killing a primer because it seems to penetrate so well.
I never had it happen but I'm careful to keep it away from the back of the loaded round.
