im needing to put a new barrel on my AK-74, its a caliber conversion that will include .223/5.56mm feed ramps, galil magazines, and most likely the 223 bolt out of a saiga
but the barrel im trying to get for it is as im about to describe it...
contour will be a match for the AK-74 barrel contour, 16 inches long.. MAYBE the contour will be thickened a bit, as the mounting points on the barrel for the gas block, rear sight block, etc are larger than the diameter of the barrel around it.. if i enlarged the barrel contour to match this, it would be a bit more rigid and all the original barrel hardware will still fit just fine
id LIKE to go with the .223 wylde chamber for a more accurate chamber spec but still capable of handling 5.56mm without issues, but if this isnt possible, id rather have 5.56mm over 223
for the rifling.. 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist, i plan on fine-tuning a load based around the 75 grain hornady a-max bullet so i need a faster twist to stabilize the bigger, longer bullet, but id still like the option of firing military surplus ammo as well
lastly, im not sure if i want to go chrome lined, nitro-carburized, or stainless steel.. id like accuracy, but id also like corrosion resistance and barrel life.. id be more inclined to stay with chrome lined (can these be-relined later to extend barrel life further?)
so what im thinking is the enlarged AK-74 barrel contour, 1-7" twist, chrome moly blank, chrome lined, .223 wylde chamber
or option 2, standard AK-74 contour, 1-7" twist, chrome lined, 5.56mm chamber
what would option 1 cost.. for this id have to buy a .223 blank in the twist rate of my choice, have it contoured, chambered, and then chrome lined
option 2 i would buy a 5.56mm AK barrel from k-var, pay someone to have it turned down to fit a 22mm trunnion (how much would turning the trunnion end of the barrel down cost?)
