Has anyone figured how much each shot costs out of a BP revolver? Box of 100 balls-divide price by 100, caps, powder, etc

NewShooter, I did just that a few years ago but don't remember what I came up with. I have had my powder, balls and caps for over a year now because I buy quite a bit at a time .I don't remember what I paid for them but It's easy to figure if you figure out haw many g. of powder in a pound and you know what a hundred caps and a hundred balls cost. I would need to figure in a hundred pack of wads too.
Let me know what you come up with and I'll check some new prices in our area this year and let you know what it cost here. Mike
PS Where are you in Ohio? I was born and raised in Copley , 5 miles west of Akron.

So Much Fun Who Cares!

This is guesstamet from awhile back... now about the cost of a .38spl or maybe a stamp 37 cents depending on if you cast your own balls, and make your own lube pills. I do both and use only "Holy Black" powder, I have almost as much fun makin my homemade stuff as I do shootin it. So actually my answer would have to be, who cares? LoL! HeHe

SmokinGun, Good point, LOL.
I do know that a pound of powder is 7000 grains. But I don't know what Goex is going for now.
My swaged .454 balls are $7.20 a hundred
My wonder wads are about $6.00 a hundred .
Can't remember how much a hundred my German #1075 caps sell for either.
Haven't bought any of this for a while now because when I do I buy way to much .....well, that's what my wife say's :uhoh: Down to my last can but I havent told here that, Mike

I came up with about .30/shot. But thats buying several things by the hundred. Buying in quantity would certainly reduce the numbers.
BTW: Beartracker, I'm outside of Zanesville

Yep, Been to Zaneville a few times many years ago. I would say your real close all depending on who buys what and who makes what. Alot of variables with the price of new super dooper powders today, :D Think I'll just stick with my old Goex FFFg. Hard to beat something that's been doing such a great job for so many years and much cheaper than most powders today.Mike

:) Good point AFS!

For me, based on full retail today in small quantities, not ordering in bulk to save, I paid:

Hornady .454 balls 7.4 cents
CCI #11 Caps 3.2
Pinnacle FFFg 9.0 cents (using 7000gr per pound, 30gr load for me)
Wonder Wad 8

Grand total of : 27.6 cents a shot.

Making your own wads to me is the most likely place to save some cash.
Lead is hard to come by for me.

TexasSIGman, When you try that Pinnacle let me know what you think about it. Any easier to clean up, still getting good groups and that sort of thing. I have been reading some good things from people who have tested it and so far it is really getting great reviews. One guy said he can't tell any difference in shooting it but it is much easier to clean up.If it wasn't made by my favorite Goex then I would not be interested, Lol. Mike

I posted about the Pinnacle over in that thread. You know I don't have the slightest idea what I'm doing here so my opinion doesn't weigh much, but it cleaned up easily.

I am only guessing at the 9 cents a round, since I got mine for free. I used the published retail price for the stuff here.

No one in my area is carrying it, so I don't know if I will be able to use it once I run out of my free sample.

#11 cap= 2.5c
20grs of Goex FFF at $10 per pound= 2.9c
home cast lead ball=free
old crisco for lube and no wad= free
Total= 5.4 cents per shot

I bought 1000 CCI caps about 2 years back for $25 per 1000.
The Goex I buy periodically from a distributor.
The lead balls I cast myself from a stash of scrap lead.
I sometimes use crisco for an overshot chamber sealer, and I don't use any undershot wad under the ball.
Casting your own is definitely a way to save money in BP shooting, provided you can find a source of cheap pure lead or reasonably soft alloyed lead.

Not sure if this has been suggested here yet or not, but an EXCELLENT source of most likely free PURE lead is your local dentist or orthodontist. That's right, you hear correct. Every time they take an x-ray, the film wrapper has to be disposed of. Well, this wrapper has a layer of lead coating it. Apparently it's not too hard to divide, and most dentists wait will they have several tens of pounds before PAYING to have it taken away.

If you are on good terms with your dentist, try explaning to him what you do and plan to use it for, and I'd be willing to bed he'd unload all he has on you and promise to provide you with even more in the future. Of course, if you salvage your balls from your target w/ some kind of bullet trap (big box layered with 1/2" plywood and newspaper), eventually you won't need any more (for a while anways).

Just thought I'd throw that out there for ya'll. ;)
