I stopped up to Kessilrings Gun Shop up in Bow Washington after work today to grab a few shell holders that I needed and an older gentleman cam in the gun shop and had something to show up out in his truck.
He had a nice size male cougar he had just shot about an hour before he showed up at the gun shop.
He has been trying to call this cougsr in for a while and today was his lucky day.
By the worn out front teeth they think it was about eight years old.
He had a deer fawn decoy set up and was doing fawn in distress calls and cougar whistles.
He said he used a 223 to shoot it.
One cougar will kill one deer a week plust any small game they can catch.
He just saved around fifty deer a year.

About a month or so ago a cougar got ran over by a train in the same general area. Maybe seven miles away to the west.

The guy that took this picture works for the Burlington Northern Railroad.

Calling a cougar in and shooting it would be an ultimate predator hunt.

Where I take my grsndson shooting is kind of remote and from three to six miles off tje blacktop roads on to gravel forest service roads and there are cougars, wolves and both black bears & grizzly bears. But the bigest threat are the tweekers. We both carry a side arm up in the mountians. Late last summer we seen a half grown cougar about fifty pounds or so cross a forest service road on our way out of the woods.

Unless I'm mistaken, member Wankerjake called in a cougar and shot it about 2-3 years ago.

That looks like a good size cougar. What did it weigh?. That one he shoot the other day was around 140 pounds.
Yours looks bigger.
The state treed and tagged a big male cougar over by Spokane last year that weighed a 197 pounds and released it.

Were you actively hunting for that cougar or was it a chance encounter?
A couple of the guys I ralked to that happened to of shot one were hunting other game and they just happened to of crossed paths and got their cats.

Out here in Washington State a lot of guys try calling them in. They say the cats will sometimes come in and sit unseen and just watch over whats going on and then leave.
One guy was calling for cats, he got up.to go try another area and there was a cat about ten feet behind him. That would be a scary situation. If I ever try large predator calling I'd want a hunting partner that can shoot straight with in sight.

Did you have your cat mounted or tanned?

When I was working at a friends dairy farm i got the cull cows to butcher. One guy bought a couple of butchered cows got a cougar on some property he was warching over. He bow hunted that property and it was over run by coyotes so he would come h take the calves that died to use ss bait out in the woods and sat ip in a tree stand and shoot the coyotes when they came in for a free meal.
He had trail cams set up around the calf carcasses to see their time of arrival and approach routes.
After some time a cougar started visiting the dead calf bait area. It took three more dead calve to harvest that cougar.
He had a wall rug made out of it.
When I get up that way I will get a picture of it.
