I am thinking about trying out Redding 3 die set for the .223. It comes with a FL sizer, a neck sizer and a bullet seater.

I understand that a FL sizer has a decapping pin with a neck expander on it. So using the FL sizer would decap, FL resize and expand the neck. However, from the pictures, it seems that the neck sizer only expands the neck of the 223 case. Isn't this a redundancy in work? There must be more to the neck resizer? Sorry, just kinda new in the reloading realm.

#2 question, if I decide to get the redding set, I would like to try the carbide size button, would this mean I need to get 2 carbide buttons one for the neck sizer and FL die?

A sizing die whether it be full-size or neck-size doesn't expand anything, quite the opposite.

A full-length sizer die will re-size the entire case. A FL size die can be adjusted to only re-size the neck, called partial re-sizing by back off the die so the shoulder is not worked on during the process.

A neck-sizer die does just that, works on the neck. This die is usually only used for cases fired in the same rifle. Also, target and benchrest shooters are the ones that normally use this die. Eventually, neck-sized brass will have to be run through a FL die because at some point the brass will grow to a point where it can't be chambered.

Isn't this a redundancy in work?
Full length die(sizes whole case) & neck die(sizes neck only)>only 1 type used at a time, not both. Both will size the neck area smaller, then the expander will open the inside of the neck to the correct diameter. Both inside necks need lubed. 2 new carbide expanders are needed. Neck size die a waste of $$$ IMO:uhoh: Always full length resize for autos.

As mentioned, your die set had given you a choice - for many, neck-sizing only gives better accuracy - only for single shots and bolt guns. Semi's like an AR require full length sizing. Determine which one you're going to use and put the other sizer away so you don't use the wrong one

#2 question
You can easily swap the decapping assembly with the carbide ball from die to die. No need for two carbide buttons.

I use Redding carbide buttons on my Redding and RCBS sizers. Work great.
