Could someone explain what a "target" gun is?

Who says the J-frame isn't a target frame? I just bought a 4in model 63 with adj. sights to prove otherwise :)

A nice blued 36 is on my to-pick-up list. I'm in cali and they go for $500-600. Short barreled smiths are in high demand for some reason.

I thought a "kit" gun was one you put together yourself, no kidding. I'm glad I didn't say that out loud to anybody at the gun shop.

Thanks for the excellent explanations. I am finally having the time to read through this whole thread more carefully. So much good information here. I feel like I have really homed in on the gun thanks to you guys.

I will try to be patient while I continue my search but it is not easy.

Yep, it happens to me from time to time, too.

You would be amazed at how many of us have been through that exact same experience.

I once laid a gun down on the table at a gun show, to get my wallet out and a guy snatched the gun from in front of me and handed the money to the vendor.

Never that blatant. Guess either I never had anyone that rude standing next to me, or my presence overwhelms those gathered 'round into gentlemenly behavior. I have had folks ask to look after I'm finished. Or even told me they were interested in buying it if I was not.

Ha!!!

I remember being there. I've even had to walk past guns I had been wanting for years, sitting there in great condition and at a great price, but I couldn't afford to buy it. All I had was money for loading components, or a license, or some other such need that day.

You'll find something soon. Be patient, diligent and observant.

Does anyone know if there is a square-butt version of the Smith 36-6 or the 60-4? Or would that be an entirely different model number?

A square butt version of the revolver will have the same model number, but a different engineering change (commonly called a "dash") number. I do not have a list of which dash numbers have a square butt though. Just as an example, a 36-5 may have a square butt and a 36-6 a round butt.

I have seen K, L & N-frame grips that you can get that are designed for a round butt and are shaped like a square butt grip, but I am not sure if they make them for J-frames.

I've never seen one.

But it isn't necessary. Keep in mind that grips can be fitted to a round butt gun that will make it feel like has a square butt frame. S&W does this routinely on the current generation revolvers. They don't make many square butted frames anymore.

The reverse is not true - changing grips cannot make a square butt feel like a round butt. (Without a doubt there's a joke in there someplace).

I didn't know you could put square grips on a round butt. This is great - thanks.
