I started this thread a long time ago. https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/countdown-to-dove-blasting.215137/

I am still as excited for the first shot at the gray speedsters today as I was then. Season starts Tuesday here, but I won't be in the field until Friday... 6 more days. Buffed up 3 shotguns this morning. Trying to decide which ones I'll let do the talking this year. Not quite ready to move to the .410. Maybe late season I'll give it a go. Who else hankers for this time of year? A wise man once said, "It's not dove season in Texas unless sweat is running down the crack of your rear!" I don't think this year will disappoint. Supposed to be in the triple digits here. Hydration is the key. Looking forward to old and new friends (properly socially distant, of course), camp fires, superior BBQ and libations that adhere to the Reinheitsgebot!!

Sold my reg 1100.
Have an 1100T and SP. The T is fixed full and the SP has a magnum bbl. So no steel in either.

Have to run my 870 next weekend if i go.

Depends how hot it is. Usually first 2 or 3 days is good then theyre gone. Few hunters means they can land in the F&W fields and chow down. Shooters keep em movin......and if the birds drop off after first few days......wont be enough guys to keep.em flyin.

So for here....northern IN....

Waiting til Sat could be bad

Do you eat the doves? I used to eat them on the street when I lived in China. But those were farm-fattened and there still wasn't much on them.

I love dove hunting. The weather is still warm, you don't have to wake up early, you can listen to the radio if you want, and if its a good field, lots of action and shooting. Just sit still in some light camo with lots of water and shells. The best part? It signals the beginning of hunting season, before it starts to get cold, you are waking up early to sit quietly in a tree, and things are getting serious.

Got soft plans to go out after work everyday this week with a few guys and still working the details for a trip to take advantage of the three day weekend. Have a dozen recipes to try as well from whole roasted to pasta. Hope we get enough to try them all out.

I have loved dove shooting since I started in 1967. The best part is inviting friends and watching my dog retrieve every dove ... even if it was "lost". I had a guest who winged a bird and couldn't find it ask if my dog would look for it. I said, "Nyssa, dead bird. Hunt it up." In a minute and a half she brought the dove back. The guy offered to buy her for $800. I laughed and said, "You're joking of course."

I wouldn't sell her for $10,000 even now when she is 15 years old.

F&W area we usually put in for (draw) had less than 300 taken during the reserve hunt........for the whole property (think 10 fields).

That's horrible.

Used to limit out in a couple hrs back in the 80s.

Killed a lot of em back then, been slowly worsening since the mid 90's.
Had a good yr maybe 5 yrs ago.
Been crap since.

Have decided to give it up.

Those with good spots............have at it :)

Yes, dove season was traditionally the start of "hunting season".
A ritual.
Am sad to see it go, but it's just not worth it anymore (not here).
Allergies, usually brutally hot weather.........and w a bad neck/back it's a chiropractic nightmare.

Used to shoot local 3D archery too. Gave that up yrs ago.

Things change, and not always for the better.

Oh well, had some good times, have to just get used to the new I reckon.
Can look at the calendar and oil the 1100 T in remembrance on Sept 1.
