Just 10 miles from my house a couple hit a moose with their convertible. It came out a ditch by a lake pretty quickly. They didn't see it until a large Brown mass appeared in their windshield. Fortunately they were going fast enough that the moose mainly slid over the top taking out the windshield and tearing the top to the back but the weight of the moose did not fall on them as sometimes happens. Grown moose are so tall and long legged that it's body is above the hood of a car. They were still hurt and the car totaled. The moose died. Moose are not very common in this part of the state and due to wolves they are nearly gone from the North too. I used to see a lot of them further North. 2 days before that I rode by that spot twice on my motorcycle. That makes two very close calls, one with a big bear and one with a huge moose in this area. Be careful out there.

After seeing the damage a mere deer can do to cars, can't imagine what a moose can do.
I almost found out the hard way with a full sized deer.
I was driving down a country road, at about 50 mph, minding my own business.
It came out of the woods and ran across the road right in front of me.
It leaped over the hood, with its hooves just scraping across the windshield.
No actual contact, but mighty close.
That deer would have done well in a steeple chase race.

I have hit deer with a car. They can do lots of damage. Usually the damage is to the front of the car or truck. A moose is different because the are so tall. Usually you knock the legs out from under them and they fall unto the car. This couple was very lucky that the moose did not fall into the drivers seat. They are also around 6 times bigger than a deer. A big deer.

My aunt once ripped the top off of a Monte Carlo hitting a horse that was in the road. Same size as a moose, very similar damage. The horses weight got onto the trunk of her car though and crushed it. This was a 70s car so it was built pretty well. My worst experience to date is a turkey to the bumper of my pickup at 80mph. It twisted the bumper, broke the headlight assembly and bent the towhook, broke the grille.... $1800...but not the worst I have been involved with. I once saw a rabbit go through a radiator and AC condenser, get caught on serpentine belt and totally destroy the motor and put the truck in a ditch....that's why Chevy pickups aren't supposed to do 120mph.

I hit a mule deer just as it jumped and the truck just cut his legs out from under him. He landed directly behind my truck bed, got up and hopped off. I could find no damage to my truck's grill or front bumper.
I hit a 400 lb. calf with my wife's car and it knocked it across the highway and into the ditch .. dead. The car's front end was damaged but still drivable.
