I don't know what you have been watching on tv, but SASS, NCOWS, and W3G all shoot centerfire sixguns and carbines. The folks more interested in speed than authenticity are using some pretty light loads, but the guns are .32 and up.

I was at our local range yesterday and heard the new rule for these CAS, maybe only a local rule tho. They now have to use powerful enough ammo to at least penetrate the cardboard targets. I don't know if it's true but that's what was said. I smiled when I heard it. Chief aka Maxx Load

Cardboard targets?

It wasn't CAS (a registered trademark of SASS).

I am clanging steel with .45 Colt out of both my revolvers and my carbine, and trust me, those loads are going to penetrate quite a bit more than cardboard.

The kid shooters are allowed to shoot .22's,but the 'old kids'....meaning me and the other adults....shoot centerfire of a hundred different loads/calibers.

a couple of years ago, a Porltand oregon shooter that I know actually had a round bounce off of a cardboard target.
..what you may have heard was a reference, perhaps in joking,to that event.
..NO,we have not let hi8m live it down.:)

I have found that generally there are two types of people who get into cowboy shooting...

People who like cowboys and people who like to shoot competitively.

The "cowboys" tend to dress very authentic and shoot the 45's, the "shooters" dress with the basics (shirt, pants, boots, hat) and tend to shoot 38/357's.

Of course this is a very simplified description because of all other variations not taken into account, but there's room for everyone and we all have a good time.

FWIW - we have an open class at all of our matches where anyone can shoot a 22 if they want. It's not SASS sanctioned and nothing is ever filed but it's a way to introduce new shooters to the sport even if they do not have all of the required equipment. We'll write each stage to cater to whatever guns they bring.
