coyote hunt today

I decided to peel off from work for an hour and call some dogs on some land I have permission to hunt 5 miles from my plant. I set up in the shadows behind a tree and faced downwind looking at some wheat and CRP grass. After 10 minutes of cycling the electronic call, I spotted a 'yote at about 150 yards looking at the call. I had it in the scope for the better part of 2 minutes but opted not to shoot because of the odd piece of grass in the way. I didn't want the round to deflect. I *could* have popped the dog in the head, but that's an iffy shot. He/she got bored and walked off into the wheat and I lost sight.

I am about to load up and go get that dog under the red spotlight here in about an hour and a half. If I get it, I'll post a picture.

Just wanted to share a late spring hunt story with everyone. Wish me luck tonight!

No luck, so I think I'll try again when there's less moonlight. I did catch a set of eyes driving the turnrows...

9 total, but 4 weren't photogenic. Big litter . . . note the "squeal marks" by the one . . . proves that a steady diet of domestic pets, garbage-can delights, the occasional side of pet food, & bar-b-que left-overs (could be the hot sauce) can make for a high-performance, Nascar 'yote . . . forget tryin' to shoot that one running in a few months . . .

Sir/Madam, I find your comment/opinion rude, but you ARE entitled to your opinion. That being said here's mine regarding your commentary . . .

Sorry, but as much as I am addicted to coyote hunting (and I've called-in & bagged MANY), I have NOT and never will compromise my ethics and slaughter the helpless . . . . must be that "fair chase" thing or "in times of threat, all bets are off." To each his/her own. You may have a valid reason to feel as you do . . . I don't & and thus, I'll continue to reside within my personal ethical code & my conscience every day. I have a healthy respect for both coyotes & all other critters that I may or may not pursue. I thought this to be a "Kodak Moment'," and still do, in spite of your disgusting (in my eyes, anyway) cold-hearted (and perhaps justified) attempt to tarnish that. Hopefully, there are some on the High Road who may appreciate this photo. If not, I'm obviously a member of the wrong group of hunters & on the wrong board. I've been wrong before, but I sincerely doubt that is the case in this instance. Reckon this may be a learning experience . . .

Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Maybe you misunderstood me. I never mentioned that you should have shot those cute little babies. I more less stated that I have no use for coyotes and never claimed to have shot a pup much less seen one. In my area they have wrecked havoc on livestock and they are a nusiance.

As I said, then you may have a good reason. I grew-up on a cattle/horse ranch and still have an intense dislike for leg-breaking gopher holes & their engineers (Dad used to send me out for hours with a .22 & expected a near exact count of tails to rounds when I returned). To me, coyote hunting borders on obsession, but I have no valid reason to dispatch a pup. If they pose a threat to your livelihood, by all means, do what you need to do. Peace.

Years ago it would have been rare to have seen a coyote in my area. I am not real fond of them and consider them to be a problem like other varmits. Somehow they migrated this way or maybe (for some reason) fox hunters brought them to the area, I am not sure. Once they got started here it has been a population explosion. Farmers hunt them, but they will never hurt the population. I have often heard that they have a strong will to survive and they will reproduce like crazy. They roam the mountain tops and howl and yelp at night. A passing ambulance or fire truck siren will get them cranked up. They are like ghost and usually when I see one I don't have a rifle or its too far away. They have attacked our animals and caused many problems. I know there is no danger of me hurting the population.

Im not going to lie. i wouldn't mind having one of those cute little puppy yotes as a pet. Im sure my dogs would love to play with one.

Well I got my first 'yote this year while deer hunting. First year I hunted that I've encountered any #'s of them. Got my first one with a bow, I hunted over a small creek and someone had shot a deer they couldn't find, or it just died don't know and it was laying in the creek right in front of my stand. I cought this guy sneaking through some tall grass and arrowed him at about 15yds. I had three more failed attempts out of the same stand that year and during the local firearm season I managed to harvest two more. Saw a total of about 12 in one deer season. I even had one run a small doe out from in front of my stand.

Predator hunting is an absolute blast and my favorite 'flavor' of hunting.

My preferred instrument of death is a CZ 527 American 204.

Even though I'm easily willing to send greetings to coyotes from my .22 Hornet Contender handgun, I gotta say I can't help but like the the song-dogs. They can sure destroy someone's investment in livestock though.
