Coyote Hunting help

Hi everybody,
I recently decided that, while squirrels and jackrabbits can be fun, it loses its romance after a couple months of only that. So i was hoping to get some tips on hunting coyotes (i figure they're predators kind of and they seem pretty hard to get so, why not?). I'm a total noob at hunting coyotes and naturally i had a few questions:

1.) When is the best time to hunt coyotes?

2.) what is the preferred method? Still hunting or active stalk?

3.) would a .22 lr be suitable for coyotes or would i be better off buying a new gun in .223 or using my shotgun with #4 shot or something?

4.) is there any coyote-exclusive gear that needs to be bought?

1. Whenever you can go.

2. Calling then in to within range of where you are waiting/hiding.

3. A shotgun loaded with #2 or maybe #3 Buck and/or a .223 would be fine. A .22 magnum or .17 hmr would do pretty well. The standard .22 lr is kinda "iffy".

4. The only special equipment one needs is the calling equipment, and that can be kept pretty basic. There is a ton of other equipment peddled to coyote hunters but 99% of it is not actually needed.

I see that you are in CT. I am sure there are pleanty of coyotes there my brother in law lives in waterbury & he see & hears them all of the time, get yourself a good electronic caller and a few predator sounds cd's buy a nice decoy and a few mouth calls for back up & your set to go check out PRIMOS GAME CALLS on line they would have all of this stuff that I mentioned but dont go crazy spending a lot for stuff that you won't need or use good and then just sit & be patient & they will come

DS92 by the way a 223 rem or a 22/250 or even a 243 winc even better are great for coyotes a 22 lr or 22 mag is not enough to anchor a wiley coyote stick with these other calibers

3.) would a .22 lr be suitable for coyotes or would i be better off buying a new gun in .223 or using my shotgun with #4 shot or something?12 guage works nice as does the 223 in ar style for fast back up shots a 22lr will put em down I know I have shot them with one but it is not always a garantee that old wiley will stay down last one I shot with a 22lr was the otherday good solid hit maybe just a tad back of where I would of liked wathced ole wiley pile up and start thrashing around then as I made my way around to him he up and took off all i found was some blood and rustled leaves so from now on i will pack either my ar or my 30-06

4.) is there any coyote-exclusive gear that needs to be bought? get some good camo a good set of sticks and some calls electronic calls work great but can get expensive I have both electronic and custom made hand calls

and lastly now that your entering the wonderful world of predator hunting be prepared its highly addictive once you start you wont want to stop and remember always take a camera cause we love to see hunt pics on here and on both the other sites I told you about

1. Anytime of day works

2. I never saw anyone "stalk" coyotes, buy a $12 predator call and watch them run straight to you.

3. We have killed lots of coyotes with .22lr but that was shooting out of the kitchen window at night time. We use 22-250, 308, 300wsm, really any center fire works the best.

4. The coyote specific gear would be getting a few calls, to start with get a long range coaxer and a close range distress call. Watch a few you tube videos to see how the pro's do it and practice up. DO NOT waste money on an electric call, a shaking rabbit decoy is useful but still not necessary. I think cammo is really important also, coyotes will walk up to you and still not know what hell you are unless they get your scent. OH yea and invest in a good quality 13-23'' bipod, they are worth their weight in gold!

PS..... you will be addicted. Deer season has been open for two weeks here and all I have been doing is yote hunting

I would recommend a good centerfire cartridge (.223 or 22-250, etc) for best results.

Coyotes can be called anytime day or night (if legal in your area).

No doubt, you can find some varmint hunters in your area that would take under their wings and show you the ins and outs.

Cool thanks everybody this is all new to me. Yeah hopefully ill get out later this season around between thanksgiving and christmas. There's quite a lot of them around here.

1. A call they will respond but only once
2. A 22-250 or 243 a 22 is a little weak
