coyote rifle on the cheap?

Marlin XS7, Stevens 200, just about any Savage, Rem 700, CZ 527, Ruger 77 MKII, Howa 1500, Chances are that all of them (and many more) will shoot very well with the right loads. No work needed. Just pick which one that has the features/look/feel you want and throw on some decent glass.

If I were to do that, I would end up with just a savage, am I right?

Many would argue a Stevens 200 (essentially a Savage action & barrel) with aftermarket stock & trigger is actually a bit superior to your standard Accutrigger Savage 10 or 12 model.

The Stevens 200 might not be priced very high, but it certainly doesn't shoot cheap.

If you absolutely don't want to mess with doing any upgrades to a Stevens, then I'd personally go with a Savage 12FV (or 11FNS or 11FXP3 if you prefer a sporter barrel to a varmint barrel).

If the super chepa ones don't appeal to you, then My choice would be Howa. Mine came with a user adjustable trigger (Varminter Thumbhole Stainless) and shot 3/8 all day long. I mounted a Swift scope (6-24x50) for $250 and never looked back. But with the long heavy barrel on that model it was hefty and not handy in the brush I hunt in now.

This board is populated by Savage shills. They are accurate but ugly. The guns I mean. You won't get an answer from most. Both rifles are good. I still like Remingtons.

I've had real good luck with a Ruger MarkII stainless 223. Real good out to 300 yds depending on how you zero and what scope. I reload and glass bedded the rifle too. A sweet older one they quit making was the 700 Varmint special 223 which had a 24" regular profile barrel in 223. These were MOA or better rifles. I recommend sighting a 223 in at 250 yds. I really like the 50-53 grain bullets but there are a lot of good ones. Shot some coons one time and killed two with one shot. 223 is awesome!
