My wife visited the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar today and had to go through security to enter including metal detectors and a hand search of her purse. They confiscated her swiss army knife with the 1.5-inch blade.
Once in the fair she had a wide selection of knives, sissors, and assorted other sharp objects which she could easily purchase.

While I'm sure the danger of mid-forty year old women wielding pen knives can be well documented, I suspect this is more an exercise in feeling good and blame shifting then a serious effort to protect the masses. The scarey thing is how easily we accept this and don't question why anyone could actually be paid to make such mindless decisions. (Maybe this is how many public school administrators spend their summers.)

Did you attempt to point out how she could purchase edged weapons once inside anyways?

The so-called "security" people were trying to drum up business for the blade vendors.
