Got an email from NAHC Inside Track that this knife is available at 51% off retail for members. It looks like a really good blade, and I love the style, but I have no experience with this manufacturer.

The specs say:

  • Full-tang, fixed drop point skinner-style blade is 3.15 inches long.
  • 12C27 Sandvik stainless steel blade with stainless steel bolsters.
  • Traditional stag handle scales with brass pins.
  • Overall length is 7.3 inches. Weight is 3.8 ounces.
  • Unique horizontal-carry leather sheath doesn’t interfere with rifle or pack. Won’t bang around when you sit down.
  • Special pouch on sheath will accommodate two spare rifle cartridges from .243 up to .338.
The sheath looks a little bulky for my taste, but I could probly fix that.

What do you all think?

crkt-2845-grandpas-favorite-sheath-large.jpg I hope I'm not breaching any rules with the photos, they're the only decent shots I could find. Please let me know if I am. I understand about copyright and all that from the rules, but I'm not sure how it applies to branded pictures like this.

How much will it run after the 51 percent is taken off? I'd decide after knowing this, but I really like the blade you selected.

I say get it.

Good steel, looks, and a functional size. Should be a user.

If I didnt make my own fixed blades i would be interested.

After the discount, it's $85. I'll still have a bit of a hard sell with the Mrs considering I recently purchased a pistol, a $200 knife, and some moderately costly accessories to go with them. But hey, maybe...

Beautiful knife, beautiful sheath. I'm not happy with the name of it; when I think of a knife a grandfather would carry, I picture a carbon-steel pocket knife of some sort, a trapper or stockman pattern. The knife shown is the sort of thing a rich grandfather would carry on a hunting trip.

I've been looking at one myself.. 88.00 is cheaper than anything I've seen.. I'd go for it if I had the chance.

ebay 100.00 to 107.00 Amazon shows 98.45

I bought Russ's other knife, the Kilbuck.. I like it.

Well I figured I'd check what their shipping charges are through the deal, $85 + $12.95 shipping = $97.95 total. There is no way I'm paying $12.95 shipping on a single knife. Again :p

I did a google search and found that it can be had for $94.95 from gunkings.com with free shipping. But I think I'm gonna pass.

Grandfather

It's interesting to see the different cultural renderings of what a "grandfather's" knife should be.

Scandinavia has its own impression:

r121.jpg
The Grandfather's Knife with Wood Sheath
#R121; A stout 3" working blade in a wonderful curly birch and reindeer fur sheath. This would make a great skinner or an excellent knife for the medieval barbarian reenactor. Actually it would make an excellent knife for most anyone. It's about 7" overall, and the generously sized handle is easy to grip when the hands are cold or stiff. The price of the Grandfather in the wood sheath is $119

The Grandfather's Knife with Plain Sheath

#R120; This is the same knife in a stout leather sheath with a plastic liner. The price is $85.

The UHC Grandfather's Knife

R220; And once again for those folks who plan on doing a LOT of skinning, the same knife in UHC steel and dark stained leather sheath. $125
New from Roselli is the UHC (Ultra High Carbon) line. This is a proprietary steel with a carbon content of 1.5 - 2.0%. It is hardened to HRC of 64 - 66 and is said to hold an edge twice as long as the already excellent regular line.

Heck, they even have a "grandmother's" knife:

r130.jpg
The Grandmother

R130; The Grandmother is a handy pocket sized knife for fine tasks and craftwork. The blade is about 2 3/8" long, and the handle about 3 3/4". The small size makes it particularly suitable for those with small hands. In addition to being useful for woodcarving, it would make a nice paring knife. $59

I suppose a lot of what you expect of a grandfather has to do with where you -- and he -- grew up.

I would picture my grandfather with a whittler of some kind, despite the fact that the only pictures I ever saw of him showed him with a hunting knife of some sort in a sheath.

I have two CRKT assist open knives, and love them. I always carry one or the other when I leave the house. They make quality products, you can't go wrong with CRKT knives.
