Hi All,
I just got this new Knife from CRKT's "professional" series of knives. My primary use for it is to serve as a tanto / wakizashi for me in my kenjutsu class. I might also carry it on a backpack when bicycling to destinations where a firearm would be inconvenient to secure.
All I can say is Wow! the balance (about 1 inch ahead of the hilt), finish presentation and edge ("razor sharp" is an understatement) are superb! The handle wrap is synthetic cord over stingray skin. Very tight and solid. It does not look like the wrap is resin impregnated as it does not have a "wet" look to it. However, it is so rock solid I wouldn't be surprised if they found some way to do it with a dry look. For a large (13" blade, 18"ish OAL) knife this is actually very compact and slim. It feels great in the hand and moves very fast!
As you can see by the attached pictures (Disclaimer: I am a picture taker, not a photographer), it comes with a very nice presentation box, a modular kydex sheath that has a removable belt slot held in place with 4 Chicago style screws and plenty of tie down / lash points to secure this to your gear.
The 2 one way straps that are attached to the sheath do not come with it. They were in my parts drawer and I am experimenting with them to see if I can actually CC this knife: evil:. The answer is yes I could but it would be more of a chore than I would wish to tolerate. However, for those of you who can and do carry a large knife, the sheath for this one is very thin and low profile. It locks the knife in firmly enough that there seems to be no chance it would come out accidentally (even if carried inverted) but at the same time it does not impede a fast and quiet draw.
Make no mistake, this is a pure fighter designed to remove large parts from squishy things. You ain't a gonna pass it off as a camp, fishing or chore knife of any kind. So, please keep that in mind and know your local knife laws before wandering around with this on your person.
I tried some informal cutting using 2" and 3" green bamboo. This knife goes through it with almost no effort and with no discernible wear on the edge.
