Crooks & Liars is making fun of the gun buying frenzy

I gotta admit - the NRA as advertising wing for the industry concept did cross my mind once or twice...

The link brought up a good point: the NRA is underwritten by gun manufacturers. There is a bit of self-interest fear mongering going on. Some of the articles in the NRA magazines before the election were over-the-top. Now, it's in a gun manufacturer's interest to ride the fear wave they helped to create. The methodology hasn't backfired, yet.

jakemccoy,
I have to disagree. I have a copy of CA gun ban bill in front of me. What has happened in your state, in DC, Chicago, NYC, NOLA can easily happen nationwide. I have some problems with the NRA but they were not anywhere near over the top in this election.

There's no need to argue because we'll see, right?

Let's all hope I'm right and you're wrong, fair?

What's most scary is that it seems like many folks hope the NRA is correct about Obama.

Eagle6 is absolutely correct. If you don't think Obama would love to see California style gun laws go national, you just arent paying attention.

The Dems will likely use anti-2A gun laws as a bargaining chip with Republicans. For example, the Dems could propose a tax change to increase taxes on the rich by 20%. The Republicans would scream that is too much. So the Dems compromise and say, OK we will just make it 10%, but lets reinstate the AWB as cosolation.

Do you really think the remaining Republicans would actually turn that down???

I'm just a cynical bastard. We live in a society where the all-mighty-dollar is king. Until I see evidence otherwise, I always assume actions taken by virtually organization are going to be in some way pushing for more of those all mighty dollars to flow into their pockets.
Not necessarily anything wrong with that unless such organization is positioning themselves as something else..

Eh - if they came here, they'd say the same thing about us. Such is life.

I read it for several minutes, found it kind of entertaining, and was surprised that many defended guns intelligently, most of those being "progressives". ( I hate that term.)

Would you like to make a $1000 with me on how the justices Obama appoints will vote in future gun cases? There are plenty of online websites that will provide the betting service for us.

Look on intrade - i'm sure there's probably one there already.

Yeah, are they gonna admit that they were wrong when he starts issuing executive orders banning parts, ammo and mags from importation for starters? Somehow I don't think that they'll admit it and print a retraction.

What exactly is the bet?

If you're betting Heller will be overturned during the Obama administration, then I would like to take the bet on condition that my money is not held in escrow.

Would you be hoping you'd lose the bet and your $1000?

That would be a weird spot for you if you're truly pro-gun.

You site NYC in your quote. NYC is not New York State. You can still own firearms in NYC, however, they must be registered. New York State is a horse of a different color.

George Bush and Dick Cheney were evil geniuses bent on destroying the Constitution and taking over the country, but we the loons for expecting another weapons ban, the kind that HAPPENED the last time we had a Democrat White House and Congress! Black is white, night is day.

There was this guy in the gun store today talking about living through the depression. He said this feels too familiar and is definitely worried, while walking out with a new revolver. Cool dude.

That's a big part of the reason why my anti-gun girlfriend now wants to learn how to shoot. If SHTF and we were having a hard time putting food on the table, or things got sketchy and people started turning to robbery to feed themselves - she wants to know she can handle the situation.
Pretty crazy. All the years i've known her, I never thought i'd see the day.

If you think that gun bans are just irrational fears, you haven't lived in California.

And there are new bans proposed (and sometimes passed) every single year.

I don't think Heller will be overturned anytime soon. But I strongly suspect Obama appointees will vote in support of an AWB, registration, taxes, etc. Heller was 5-4. If Stevens and Ginsburg are the only two that retire, I suspect we will continue to have many 5-4 cases on the gun issue. My hypothesis is that in the vast majority of the coming Supreme Court 5-4 cases, the Obama appointed judges will vote against our rights and against the wishes of the NRA. What the case is about is irrelevant. That's not exactly what I'm proposing, but if we were to make a bet that is what the general feel of the bet would be like. Heller unleashed a litigation hailstorm so we will see a lot more court cases in the future to test my theory.

Given how the left side of the court ruled in the FEC cases as well as Heller and Obama's rather radical choices in friends, I think this is an extremely safe bet on my part. If you have decent credit, I'm sure I can find a gamboooling site that will allow us to bet sans escrow. Worst case scenario we invest in a bond, mutual fund or something and the winner takes the bond.

It's late and I need sleep. Maybe over the weekend I'll draft up something more concrete if you are still interested in doing a $1K bet with me.

wacki,

I'm not interested in a nebulous bet about general feelings.

Anyway, if you're pro-gun, you'd have to make your bet and hope I win...weird.

Let's be real. We're just talkin' mess on the Internet...LOL

I doubt I'm coming back to this thread. You'll have to PM me.

Regards,
-Jake

Fear buying, panic buying, whatever you want to call it, or make fun all you want.
Fact: The gun grabbing libs are now controlling the WH and both chambers of Congress. Do the math. If you don't think for one second that they will be pushing their agenda, you're living in la la land.

I'm out.
