I now know why it is slug only during the normal Ohio gun season... 000 is just too damn effective! Kicked this doe up last week, and nailed her with 7 pellets at about 15 yards. All but one passed clean through the chest cavity! And oh yes, she is tasty!

I've got a standing offer to a couple of farmers I know to cull for them if they get the permits.

A little late spring early summer venison would be tasty.
 
Lucky you to get to skinny down the herd. If your gun is a full chock change to 1buck and atleast doulble that range and take time to pattern and maybe add another 65 to that 15. or more with good sites added . If the gun is a cyclinder bore ,,,forget what i said about 1 buck but there are some control wade buck loads out now that should still exstend range some also try 0 if cyclinder bore. Grewup buckshot hunting and killed alot of deer well beyound ,a, what most people will believe if i say it so try if you can. Most guns DO favor one brand and lenght over others. Never seen one throw 3 1/2" worth while, always 3" or even 2 2/3". Bet your eat'n deer all year. Lucky you

Whether it's any more effective than a one ounce slug? Can't say.
If you've observed some of the "drives" that happen here(from a distance I hope),you may agree that buckshot could potentially be 9 to 12 times more likely to become a statistic.
 
Never been [strike]brave[/strike] foolish enough to participate in a "drive." Hardluk, there is alot of room to maneuver. I was using an 11-87 special purpose with interchangeable chokes.
 
Rem 11-87, good gun. Still don't know what choke your shooting through with that 000 but if improved or cyclinder try it at a lot longer distance. 15yards is very short and with the right combo you can really encrease that distance If you have the time, place and enought cardboard try to pattern some 1 buck loads. It is heck to have deer run by at 60 or 80 yards and hit nothing you can do it IF your shoulder hplds up,, Bring friends to help spread out the punishment. I have done some drives but only with guys i have hunted with for many years ,we use to even push slowly to each others stand if bottom hunting but do have radios to stay in contact.Lots of orange to.
 
I'll have to take a look at what choke is in it. It usually sports the extra full Turkey, but my dad pulled it out so he could run slugs through it. The reason it was such a close shot, is because I work third shift and I usually get home around 9:30 am. So after a little sleep I head out to where they bed. The short 11-87 and buckshot really does the trick when you kick them up close like that.
 
I never owned a shot gun that would through 0,00 or 000 buck. Spread out to quickly and when patternd for 1 buck some shots were long enough shooting with a bead front site you shot body of deer and could place most of the load in the body in general at some reather long distances. Out to 100 yards if tough enough to find the right combo of barrel and shot. When cleaning you would have to delead the deer, might have 4 to 8 in a ham a few in a front should and the remaining in the middle of the deer. It is suprizeing how quickly a deer will die with a load of buck in them. If i grew up shooting slugs it would have been smooth bore stuff as it was 30+ years ago and give me a 30-30 then. Did know it was even legal for herd thinning in slug country.

why not just get a cheap 20 guage, a slug barrel, and use quality slugs?ive never had any luck with buckshot in michigan, and the few people i know who DID have any luck had a semi auto or double barrel and gave both barrels at one time or just emptied the whole magazine into them.
 
The few hunters here that use shotguns use (as a rule) 12ga 00buck in 3'' magnum. Rarely anything smaller. Bama bucks and does are big and need the extra punch. As far as deer herd culling,not allowed. A farmer suffering crop damage may apply for a permit to shoot them as long as they are in the crop at the time they are shot. The deer cannot be touched and must stay where it fell until a conservation officer can come by and pick it up. I'm unaware of any changes to this law but you never know.
 
Thank God I'm not in Alabama. Ohio has it's faults, but idiotic game laws are not one.
 
Ohio: 1. Shoot it with whatever you may choose. 2. Fill out and attatch carcass tag. 3. Fill out main tag. 4. Process deer. 5. Mail main tag to the game warden.
 
Yep,that's what I mean. What I'm asking is, can you shoot a deer on sight under these rules even if it isn't in your crops? For the sake of "culling the herd". Nevermind,I guess the thread title answered that.

That may very well be. I've just never had the need to do a drive. Perhaps some day when the game is thin, and I know enough people to set up a worthwhile drive I'll give it a shot.
 
Here in the deep south, in heavily hunted areas that are overgrown, it is the only way you can harvest deer. It is also a social event that has a loooong history. I personally don't drive because my club property is such that it isn't necessary.
