When I carry my G29 in a Crossbreed Supertuck and sit down, the mag release depresses and the mag then drops free when I draw. It's a factory (non-extended) mag release. I have other carry guns, but how can I remedy this problem for when I want to carry the G29? I generally like Crossbreed Supertuck holsters I've had in the past, but I'm re-thinking that on this one. I have other holsters for other guns that work better than this.

Suggestions?

If you have another holster to use in the meantime, send it back to the maker. If it is improperly molded and depressing your mag release while simply carrying the gun, something is faulty and they will want to know about it, if they stand behind the product at all. Alternatively, you can cut away the offending part of the holster with a heated knife blade.

I had a similar issue with my Crossbreed and my M&P9c...

I emailed Crossbreed, and asked if I should attempt to cut a hole in the holster to reduce the thickness around the mag release. They promptly emailed back, stating the following...

(my name), don't trim it or punch a hole in it

Just wet the back of the leather (just around the mag button area) and then work a divot or dish shape into it where the mag button hits
When it dries, it'll hold the shape and should cure the problem

thanks

Taking their advice, I wet the back of the leather and used the blunt end of a Sharpie marker to make a dimple in the holster around the mag release. It pretty much solved the problem, with exception to when I would sit in certain bucket seats in vehicles. I just made it a habit to check the mag every time I turned to get out of the car, and found that only about 20-30% of the time after long trips would it be popped.

Here is a pic after I made the dimple, and I'd suggest you try that before either cutting or sending it back. I have a feeling it you email Crossbreed, they'll tell you to do this first anyhow.

You will need the following to solve this problem if the kydex is hitting the magazine release:

Heat gun
Leather gloves
Dowel or paint stick
Pencil

Unload the gun and insert it into the holster. Squeeze the holster a bit to determine where the holster is pressing upon the magazine release. Mark this area with a pencil. You can erase the mark after you complete the modification.

Using the heat gun, heat the area you marked with a pencil. Keep the heat gun 1"-2" away from the kydex. Use 1-2 second "bursts" (low setting- ~ 500 degrees or so) until the kydex is barely soft enough to mold. Press the dowel outward. Let cool approximately 1 minute. Test the gun. The kydex should not touch the magazine release button when you press the kydex inward.

Less is more in this case. The heat gun's airstream will want to heat a larger area than you need. Hold the holster at an angle to minimize contact with the hot air. Wear gloves or regret trying this.

sxshep, Perhaps I should have written CB, when I put slimline grips on my compact 1911 I got the mag releasing once in a while because the grips no longer tented the leather away from the button. I ended up cutting out a upward-skewed triangular hole with beveled edges, it doesn't snag but I bet that a dent would have done the trick.

230therapy, unless the OP is a lefty, the mag button is on the leather side of the ST. Good advice for Kydex remolding, though.

All this silliness to make a button not get pushed makes me love my Walther PPS even more, I know what I'll be packing today now.

Anyone who CCWs should get into the habit of always pressing the base of the magazine to ensure it's properly seated after sitting down and after standing up from sitting down. Although an unseated magazine is easy to quickly recover from (tap/rack) pressing the magazine base after you sit/stand is a simple preventive measure to minimize the possibility of a stoppage caused by an unseated magazine.

Sitting is probably the #1 cause of unseated magazines.

The Don Hume IWB holster for my Kahr had this same issue. I just slightly notched the leather so it did not press the mag release, and used a Sharpie to color it back to black where I notched it. YMMV.

Sell glock and buy a good gun---just kidding---one of the reasons I like the Walther PPS 9mm and various HKs is the push down ambi mag releases on these pistols. Good luck modifying your holsters.

Thanks for the info. Actually, I carry an H&K P7PSP a lot and now really appreciate the mag release location. I've carried other guns with a normal mag release location, but never had an issue.

I'll try modifying the holster to see if that works. It's really only an issue when I sit in my car, but that's obviously not a good situation to have a dropped mag on the draw.

I generally agree and am not a huge fan of Glocks (personal preference), but I needed a 10 mm, and there weren't a lot of options.

This is just weird, and may be a QC issue at Glock. I've carried two Glocks (G22 and G23) in my supertuck, and never had an issue. And that's WITH the extended mag release.

I've tried to induce this exact failure, and couldn't. I can push/pull/rub/etc. any way I want to, and cannot depress the mag release with either the G22 or G23 holstered.

I can get my g23 to pop it's mag by pushing on te leather holster, but with the holster actaully on, I couldn't replicate that.

You can allways trim your mag release down some. It's a cheap part.

IDK about the OP... but I'm fat (6'4'' 260lbs). I wear all my Crossbreed's at around 4-4:30 on my hip, and my love handles dislike the company of a big IWB holster lol. They tend to trip the release if seated, but like I said (and others as well), I make it a habit to check the condition of the firearm and whether the mag is seated correctly ANY time I get up from a seat or out of the car.

That may make a difference. I wear mine at 2:00-2:30, as it gives me the best concealment if I'm bending over.

My EDC is a Glock 22, which is huge by most standards, and I'm 5'10, 190. It pokes me in the ribs when I sit, and makes for a somewhat awkward draw that I had to learn to do just right.

Either way, even if I'm not wearing the holster, I simply cannot engage the mag release if the gun is holstered, no matter what, and I've tried everything except a sledgehammer.
