Went to the Wooster Mt State Range in Danbury, CT today. Great range.

Anybody who has gone to and cursed at the Blue Mt. range in Westchester Co., NY will be pleasantly surprised. This place is the opposite of that range.

Blue Mt. seems like they're trying to keep you away with their unbearable atmosphere. Single loading only, and the range officer hoovers over you. watching you and repeating it annoyingly. They charge by the hour, $10 per, and if you arrive and just miss the 1/2 hour target change, well too bad, you just lost a 1/2 hour of shooting time. The range officer gleefully told me my time was up. Bad attitude, takes the enjoyment out of shooting. Hate that place.

So went to Wooster Mt. for the first time and it was wonderful. Fire whatever you want, as many as you want to load and as quick as you'd like (or can afford).

The range officers were friendly, told you the rules and were safety conscious, but no attitude.

$15 for as long as you want to stay, 50 yard range. They sell clay pigeons if you want to set something up besides paper. Saw many shot up bowling pins on the berm to shot at also. Paper only at Blue Mt.

Highly recommended and worth the extra travel time if you're from NY. Close enough to the Danbury Fair Mall that you can drop your significant other off at the mall, and shoot for a couple of hours while they shop.

The best part was I went there to test my hunting rifle, and it was spot on. Gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I used to go to Wooster Mt. back in the early '90s when I lived in West Redding. It is a nice place.
When I was there there was a RO who had curly red hair and used to be an SR-71 pilot (he may have flown other planes too). I don't recall his name .... wonder if he's still there.
IIRC the range is on Rt. 7. Oh, and the Danbury Mall is a nice visit too.

They have ranges in NY? That's kind of like oil and water isn't it? Glad you had a good shooting time in CT. I'm in south east CT and Blue Trails is the closest public range. Of course there are a lot nice private clubs over this way.

Yes, it's on Rt. 7, about a 1/2 mile past the Danbury airport.

Oh, gee NY bashing, that's unusual.

Seriously, NYS has some of the best hunting in the country, probably 2nd or 3rd behind PA, which used to be #1 and still may be, in deer yield. Plenty of public and private ranges and hunting spots.

Please don't confuse NYS with NYC, although even NYC has many ranges, including some outdoor ones.

I shoot at a private outdoor 25 yard pistol range in Westchester County and it's great, just needed a longer range to sight a rifle in for hunting.

I looked it up on Google Earth some time back, and surprised to see how Rt 7 curls right behind the backstop. When I went by a week or so later, I saw how the road dips down about 30 ft and you'd have to shoot through 100 yards of dirt to hit a car.

Actually Rt 7 is behind the range points, not behind the backstop.

I've been looking for a longer range public option in southern CT for quite a while - no point in having long distance rifles and no long ranges to practice with them!

That being said, weather permitting, I'll probably be warming up my FR-7 at Wooster Mtn on Sunday.
