Just wondering what are some bad range/gun shop experiences you have had?

I've only had one with some jerk up at a local unsupervised range. Everyone called it cold to check on targets. Me (and the guy) were at the pistol range which is about 7 yards. In the middle there is the 100 yard range, and on the left is the 50 yard range:
_ _ _l_100_l

l_50_l xx - people here

_ _ _ _ _ _ _l_7_l x you are here

Anyways, most everyone was back aside from about 3 to 4 people walking back from the 100 yard line. The jerk thought he was cool (being in the National guard apparently - he also had some of his NG buddies with him) and said, "Well if they want to send me to Iraq..." then chambered a round in his WASR-10 (Or some sort), "then I've got news for them." My friend who I was at the range went off on him explaining the "cold" part of it and how you are supposed to leave your firearm arm alone. His response, "relax man, I know what I am doing I am a Sergeant in the National Guard." HA! We were about to leave but I we just started shooting so we moved to the 50 yard range.

  • What bad range experiences have you had?

Another bad experience I had was at a gun shop. I had just started shooting about 3-4 years ago at the age of 13. My dad took me to an indoor range to shoot my POS Rossi .22/.410. Anyways, it was probably late January or early February. We had purchased 50 range hours the previous year (maybe September or November). At the time we bought them, he said they would carry over to the next year as well. Well, once get go there and are telling him we are going to the indoor range, he says they have a new program. You pay $150 for unlimited range use for one year. When my dad told him we already payed for the range hours last year (that he said would carry over), the owner said that we would get those range hours... if we payed the $150 for this year! My dad told him, "Well you said these range hours would carry over." And yet again his response was the same! We just immediately packed up and left.

Me and my same friend as mentioned in the range story above once went in there to get some ammo. He watched us as if we were going to steal something! Oh some people!

  • Have any bad gunshop experiences?

What does a Sgt. in the NG have to do with it? Rules are rules, especially when someone could get hurt/KILLED! I would have gone off on him too.
I have not had any "Bad" experiences other than some guy watching me and 3 girls that were with me shoot all afternoon only to ask if he could have our spent brass when we started packing up. We were the only ones shooting and he was just sitting a few lanes away. It was kind of creepy that he was watching the girls, I didn't mind him collecting our brass...

What on earth did he mean when he was talking about being sent to Iraq? How did that relate to him loading a round during cease-fire? I'm surprised someone with military training would be so negligent.

well I kind of only started listening to him once he started talking about being in the National Guard. I heard one of his friends say something like Them being redeployed to Iraq. At that point, I guess he was kidding, he said, "this is what I think of that!" Then he chambered a round. Once the range was hot again (forgot to add this part) he quickly unloaded all 30 rounds in his WASR.

Last time I was at the range outside of Astor someone brought their toddler to the range. The little guy was not to happy about wearing ear muffs and kept taking them off and crying. Then he kept running around the lanes out in front of the shooters while the range was hot. Finally the guy grabbed the his kid and left.

C.S.S. = see below

Some people dont deserve to have kids. That is just to scary.:banghead:

"relax man, I know what I am doing I am a Sergeant in the National Guard."

Reminds me of the guy made famous in the video who was showing weapons to kids and their parents, saying something to the effect that he was the only one in the room qualified to handle the gun, when he shot himself in the leg.

I was shooting clays at a local unsupervised range when a "bubba" set his shotgun butt first on the ground (order arms position) and somehow it discharged narrowly missing his head. Mostly. He had one pellet graze his head. That was a number of years ago when I first started shooting, and lets just say that really drove the idea of keeping the muzzle in a sfe direction.

Relvoverman357,

"bump" is a way to 'bump' your thread to the top of a section so people can see it and hopefully post on it.

quick messages; 2 bad incidents in a gun shop, Altamonte Springs FL

I've had 2 seperate - incidents in the same gun shop; Pace Outfitters in Altamonte Springs Florida. I've posted them here before but it has been a few years...

1) The first was when I wanted to buy a special order Bianchi shoulder rig(left handed) for my new Taurus small frame .38spl revolver. I went to the front counter and the sales clerks were EXTREMELY rude. They had no idea what I was talking about or what I want to PAY THEM $$$ for! :banghead: The owner/GM/CEO/whatever of Pace was there too and treated me like #%&@. He refused to answer my basic questions(how much will it cost?, how long will I need to wait?, etc). I wanted to jump over the counter and shove the old guy up against the wall, but that's elder abuse,. I finally set up a order for the Bianchi holster then later had a refund because Bianchi ended the production line for that holster, :banghead:.

2) The 2nd time was when I wanted to buy a NIB Ruger GP-100 blue steel .357magnum 4". I saw a listing FOR PACE OUTFITTERS IN ALTAMONTE SPRINGS FLORIDA. I called the shop and was told to come in and speak to the CONTACT LISTED IN THE POST. When I went into Pace, the employees at first started to deny any listings and said the sales clerk did not post anything,. When I showed them the print out from www.gunsamerica.com they did a 180 and then said they had put the Ruger .357 online, :cuss:.

This shop is still in Altamonte Springs FL. If you ever come to central FL stop in and tell them you read this post on TheHighRoad.org .
PM me the response from the mgmt and/or employees, :D.

Not to bad of an experience for me, but this morning a friend and I met at the range and it was busy so we waited for two lanes next to each other since we planned on swithcing guns. Well a guy about my age (24) and his girl were shooting in the stall next to me and he kept harassing her on every single shot, she mentioned it was her first visit and he started her out on .357 and .45. and kept screaming "fix your stance""relax""stop jerking" not really the best way to get someone involved in shooting if ya ask me. It was like shooting next to Ike Turner...

Just so you all don't think that idiots are something new to shooting.... 40+ years ago, 3 of us were down range putting up our targets after calling the range cold. A guy and his 2 kids, over at the far end of the shooting benches, opened up at his target with a .22 rifle. We literally hit the dirt until he stopped. When we finally got back to him and asked what the H*ll he thought he was doing, his explanation was, " Well you were over on that side and I don't miss." We tossed him off the range. However, if he hadn't had his kids with him I suspect we'd have done a bit more then just that.

Un-supervised range. No Range officer. Left to the awareness of the folks at the range. Things will happen ..........un-fortunately. Shooter beware!!

bad target range; RULES...

In Nov 1999, my good friend and I went target shooting on a public range run by the PA Game Commission. We got into a big dispute with 2 nutbag PGC wildlife officers who claimed we were shooting more than 6 rounds out my Beretta 96D .40 pistol. I explained to these catfish cops that federal law allows 10 round pistol mags. Both of us were cited with $134.00 tickets, :cuss:. We told the officers we would plead not guilty. The sworn LEO/game officer(who I later found out was the 3rd highest ranking PGC officer in that section of the state,) started to argue with me, go through my property without my consent and went into a trash can looking for more things to cite us,. I told my friend to relax and knew the game officers had a weak case.

We paid the tickets in advance(a PA state policy I still disagree with) and filed not guilty pleas. We later got mailed notices to go to court, a local district justice. The sworn LEO/game officer extended our court date, and when we finally went to court we had it out. Our 10-15 min trial lasted over 90 min :D. The justice was POed at me but did agree that the PGC officers had no valid case and the charges were bogus. We won!:neener:

The big lesson I learned was to READ and UNDERSTAND all range rules/policy BEFORE you use it. I'd also be aware of any range officers or cadre too. If you have any problems or issues let them resolve them. Be considerate of other target shooters too. Wait until the range is clear before you go downrange and/or talk to other lanes/shooters before you fire. It's a safe fun way to use a firearm range.

Good for you Rusty!:D

It seems like you encountered some mall ninjas in that range.

It seems like instead of owning guns, this guy is more suited to picking up litter in NYC subway stations. Once a while you might even find free Big Macs between the rail ties too, although they may be pitch black from the dust and several weeks old.:D Why does the MTA waste billions of dollars on sophisicated equipment like VacTrak while there are plenty of overly egotistic individuals like that that could have a REAL job?

We have a "no tracer" or no incidiary round rule. Lots of dry leaves, etc. downrange that can catch fire.

While a friend and I were sighting-in last year, another guy next to us started talking about trying out some tracer rounds he had for his AR. I reminded him (politely) that they were not allowed at the club.

A minute later, the same guy asks us to go "cold," jumped in his car and hauled tail down to the end of the rifle range. I was busy looking through my binoculars at my target when my friend said, "Did you just tell that dumb SOB not to shoot a tracer?" I looked farther downrange to see that guy jump out of his car to stomp out the fire.

Sheesh.

Rachen it was interesting to say the least, if I had to guess he was either an LEO in training or a bullseye shooter and convinced all mankind should be as wonderful as him on their first range trip... They finally left and it was nice not to hear him screaming over the gunfire...

According to Sigmund Freud, people who act all up tight and very intimidating or super often has problems with their inner emotions and feelings.

I feel sorry for that gal. I would jump in front of a train or eat s*** before I even think about treating my girlfriend with such negativity.:neener: That guy doesn't deserve to have a girlfriend or own guns.

MTA should retire VacTrak from service and put this fellow to work cleaning the junk from the tracks. Work will teach him how to be a better person in society. Hehe:D

not a bad experience but a scary one

Back before i got into shooting maybe 6 years ago at an indoor range gun shop i buy things from everyonce in a while (to high of prices) there was a man killed in the shooting range. Well it ended up being ruled a suicide but im not entirely convinced. Even though i dont even shoot at this range or any other range (Yay for living out in the country and having a personel range)

full refund/PGC

Both my friend and I got full refunds for our fines/court costs. I do not think that system is fair. In America, you innocent until PROVEN guilty, ;). Why should you be required to pay a fine for an offense you pled NOT GUILTY to? I can understand the court costs/fees but not a fine for a ticketed offense until after the case has been adjudicated.
The PGC game officers knew they had a weak case. The first PGC officer to cite us at the scene was not even a sworn LEO but a "reserve officer". He was very rude and unprofessional. The 2nd wildlife officer(a sworn LEO, armed with a S&W .357magnum and a PGC supervisor, :uhoh:) was a complete a-hole. He tried to play "good cop-bad cop" by himself with us. I had to laugh, :D. At first he was Mr nice guy then he went off and started to gripe at me.
I explained in court in detail what he did on the scene and ask the game officer questions about the incident. The reserve officer LIED several times under oath and the sworn LEO balked at my line of questions about the incident. He never clearly IDed himself, read us our rights or told us what he was doing there. The LEO also took photos of our range and told us he had a "complaint" about us from a target shooter. The shooter never came to court to testify and/or provide a sworn statement about the complaint.
My friend got more upset at the trial than I did about our civil rights but I knew the justice would not allow us both to be cited for the same offense.

I've not been shooting long, but no.

The range I go to has very professional staff, very courteous and patient with new shooters.

The staff at the stores I've been to have all been very knowledgeable and polite.
