I went to Starbucks this morning and there was this fella openly carrying a Glock. He was not in uniform and didn't look particularly LEO or anything. No one said a word or looked funny to the guy. I was pretty surprised that in a city like Raleigh open carry would not draw the screams of the Soccer Moms to him! There were a couple cops in the starbucks, and I saw them leaving as I got into my car. I pulled up and started chatting...the officer told me open carry is legal and no it's no big deal even in the city. He also advocated that I get my CCW (which I have) and even put in a plug for Bush saying that the current administration's attitude is what helped get CCW on the books round here. I guess I always thought that even in states with open carry laws, you would get harassed exercising that right in the big cities.

I just moved from San Diego, and the whole thing felt like a breath of fresh air to me. Culture shock in a very positive way! :)

Good to hear. I had the occasion to spend some time in NC and found the people there having more common sense than is common ;) I'm working on getting my FL CCW so I can exersize my rights more often.

Nothing's more refreshing than hearing tales of the police taking the citizen's side, rather than reading from some elitist "guns for me but not for thee" script!
 
Don't take the following as gospel, but as its been explained to me, while open carry in NC is legal, its also problematic. If someone gets spooked and calls 911, you could be cited for "inciting panic". Apparently it takes two witnesses to your action to violate this law, one of whom could be the responding officer. Minimum the weapon will be confiscated, plus fines/court costs after.

I don't have citations or case law for the above, but would invite other NC residents with more knowledge to give a definitive answer.

I've seen open carry in the local wally world, but the guy had a SBI t-shirt on when he turned around...not a uniform, but he had the creds no doubt.
 
Hammer - the cop I spoke with did tell me that you can be prosecuted for "carry to the public terror" or something like that - and he said it was basically a shotgun carried around or an un-holstered handgun. FWIW
 
Biggest culture shock for me was when I was in NJ in 1987. I was working in Brick Hospital in Brick township. I was the ER physician. I have a very authenic female southern accent. This was around the time that Lymes Disease was a big thing in the press. I had I don't know how many people come to the ER to have their TICK professionally removed. Well I almost laughed out loud at all of them and I almost put them in shock when I just reached up and plucked the thing off and washed it down the drain. I told them I was from Arkansas where Tick picking was a nightly family ritual. One lady was enraged that I did not examine HER tick for Lymes Disease. Now just to tie in guns the head nurse found out from me that while at home I drove a pick-up truck with gunrack in the back with a REAL gun in it. She almost had a fit of the vapors.:evil:

For Now, In my area huge population of retirees form more liberal area's running for local offices and winning, and changing things to the way it was up north or wherever they left from.
 
Beware NC gun laws.

Open carry may be sanctioned by law but it is subject to the interpretation of the local LE. You may be legal but you are the one with the problem until it gets sorted out.

We discussed it in CCW class. The instructor said open carry was legal but it was not advisable to do it.
