I'm looking for a current security problem to do an oral report on. So far I have Convenient store problems (stop-&-robs), ATM problems, and Post-disaster security issues. Still looking for a unique subject that will make an impression on the class.

Subjects such as identity theft and insurance fraud are allowed, but I'd prefer to report on a problem that put people in physical danger.

Note: not looking for anyone to do a report for me, just fishing for topics.;)

Car jackings are always fun to talk about. If you're allowed visuals, there are lots of videos around.

Rosie O'Donnel has an armed bodyguard, yet speaks out against gun rights?

Sorry, I got nothing, but couldn't resist a flameout.

Public school security

Read up on Beslan.

Read up on the copies of US schools emergency school response plans that were found in Iraq. Made Yahoo and MSM at the time.

Do not know if they are on the net but there are definetly AQ videos captured in Afghanastan that show roleplayers practicing a school asault with the shooters and roleplayes were using English in commands and responses. I and my SO watched them exactly 1 week prior to Beslan. Freaked us out bigtime.

Ask your local school district but at most schools the students are taught to huddle in a dark room out of sight of the window of the door with the door locked with a doorknob lock. Hm... and locking the door with glass in the door is realy going to stop someone. :scrutiny:

How about home invasions? Maybe discuss how to prevent, teach your family about home entry scams, etc and also how to secure your home.

I was thinking about identity theft, but that has been played out I think.

Just some ideas.

i think the school issue is pretty good...

there's the whole MESS that is air travel and airport/airplane security.

if you're looking bigger picture, you can get into terror attacks: dirty bombs, poisoning of water supply, biochemical attack of food supply or just general population.

good luck!

Another vote for border security- an important topic- show how the US Gov't welcomes the Mexican invasion and how it will ruin our country...

Could you guys cut out the bull**** pseudopolitic rants, which were basically planted by the folks who want us to vote Anyone But A Republican, and get to the matter at hand?

I concur that developing a reaction plan to a school attack (or an attack on another type of facility), would be an interesting idea... Contrast your plan with the basic "we go into lockdown and cower in our classrooms" bit that most schools seem to utilize.

Count this as one vote for the school security plan. That's a big one.

Verging on a political note, I do not know how people can trust the mere education of their children to an institution which seems to disregard the immediate physical safety of said children to such a degree as the public schools do.

Car dealers

How about car dealerships. I worked for a Honda dealer in N.C. and saw more crime on that car lot than you can ever dream of. They need a reality show about a car dealership.

Another vote for school security / school violence prevention. School put cameras in the hallways and think they are safe. Bull Butter. The local SWAT does dry runs through the school and they think that helps. It does not. It does help SWAT if they respond, but it does not prevent attacks.

I suggest you do research on what actually works in preventing attacks. My quick input is that not much works besides controlling access with fences with manned gates.

Let's keep the political commentary out of Strategies and Tactics. S&T is about solving real world problems. That makes it non partisan.

Border and School shootings are real problems, but they cannot even be discussed w/o becoming politically charged. Increasing awareness of students to thwart these things before they happen would be the only thing you could do without discussing politics.

The meth issue in the PNW is a good one, particularly how to spot these dirtbags. How to secure a construction site of materials these meth heads are stealing and turning in for scrap. Maybe having all the scrap metal recycling depots have some sort of security cameras that could be provided to authorities to help build cases.

How to make sure the Sudafed stays out of their hands with ID requirements, sales limits to individuals, and what not for purchases might be a direction to take. Oregon put the stuff behind the pharmacy counter. Not many people liked it, but I suspect a lot of meth heads are now recorded on cameras purchasing their base chemical product because they get it from the pharmacy. It would be interesting to investigate into this stuff since so many places that carry these products also have the recording media with the information.

Any effort to consolidate this information and investigate the repeat purchasers of said sudafed type products would be interesting and could be a big move towards a real solution. However, that's a big can of worms and becomes a political issue simply by trying to attain all the video data. Facial recognition software would be helpful. But then again, this would likely drag it out into the political arena rather quickly.

im going with the rosy odnald shiot terror on the us ah every ones going to do that its to easy to find information on
but a confession from rossy will work out well no one knows and every one will be shocked it will turn out great

@TheSunDanceKid

Your reply made my temporal cortex seize up something terrible. Could you not do that? :neener:

all the live long day

The lack of security on our national railroad lines where enormous amounts of toxic, explosive and dangerous materials are transported through and around most of our major cities is certainly a poignant subject.

Would any RR cops care to share their experience in firearms? They certainly work in all kinds of weather and travel most everywhere.

Security Problems

I'm going to interpret this as "situations with inherent risks."

Owing a ranch in South Arizona.

Owning or working for a courier service.

Hiking in the back woods, especially in national parks.

Choosing to rent an apartment in East Los Angeles.

Choosing to live below (downstream from) a big dam that holds a big lake.

Choosing to do your grocery shopping late at night and parking 50 yards from the store.

Sailing a small boat in certain parts of the ocean, frequented by pirates.

Off the top of my head, that's it for now.

I like the school security one. The current one in some New Jersy districts is huddling the kids together and locking them down in a " kill box " , sorry I mean gymnasium or cafeteria and not letting the parents in to get them. I was not happy when I found this one out. Depending on the security risk.
