I love J-Frame revolvers, but the 642 seems to get most of the recognition. I like the 442, and am trying to get one. What I am wondering, though, is whether or not anyone has done any customization to theirs? Different grips, sights, all of that stuff. If you have, please post your pics!

I like my 442 alot, it's always with me. I wish it shot 2 inches left of its current POI at 10yards. (I've filed the side of front sights in the past, but won't with this one) But other than that there is nothing I want to change and I'm way bad to "improve" my hand guns. No hammer to dock, no trigger groves to grind smooth. If I put larger stocks on it, it wouldn't fit in my pocket. If you've seen one you've seen mine. Stan

i' haven't got any pictures of my 642...because there isn't much to see, but mine has had quite a bit of work on it.

it's almost all internal. that action has been balanced and blue printed...the cylinder spins forever. the DA is as smooth as warm butter and the cylinder latch has had it's edges beveled.

it currently wears rubber Uncle Mike's Boot Grips which ends at the bottom of the butt frame.

i'm torn between a gold front dot or a night sight

Here you go, Volk:

It's not a custom gun but I did action job and had S&W turn the barrel to correct POI and reduce bc gap. I think they may have replaced the barrel instead of turning it. Grips are Pachmayr Compac Pro's; they are almost same size as OEM Uncle Mike's but escutcheon screw won't rust :)

hoptob

Your UM grip screw rusted too?
When mine did, I went to a hardware store
with the screw and replaced it with one
in stainless. You're right...Pachmayrs never rust.
I have the Compacs on all 4 of my J Frames.

Are the barrels often poorly aligned on these? This is not the first time I've heard of POI problems.

My new but no lock 442 is pretty much right on. Certainly I was also surprised with the trigger. I do trigger work on Smiths but never lighten up the pull on a ccw unless it is real bad. I just smooth them out. The feel on this 442 was perfect right out of the box. Certainly better than a ccw needs to be.

9mmepiphany,

Who did the work on your 642 and how much if you don't mind my asking?

Coach, that brass screw rusted so badly that it stuck to the nut and I had to drill it out :(

Volk, I too read about misaligned barrels once in awhile. Don't know how often it happens -- there's a lot of airweights out there. Mine was overclocked by 2-3 degrees; you could just see that it was off.

Glad yours was right on out of the box, Racinbob. Mine wasn't. Button on top of the mainspring stud was out of round causing nasty friction at the end of the pull. I also prefer 14-15 lb rebound spring to the factory 18 lb. I feel that 18 lb is not really needed if the action is smooth. Just my 2 cents worth.

mine was done by Dale Marietta who used to have a shop in Sactramento, but has since moved to Bend OR...his shop used to be call D&M Gunsmithing. i don't remember what i paid to have it done, it was years ago...but i'm thinking $80-120

if i had another J-Frame i needed work on i'd send it to Randy Lee of Apex Tactical in Morro Bay CA

i don't know what he charges either. i usually just send a gun in, specify the use i'll put it to and tell him to correct anything he finds. i need to have confidence in a smith before i send in a gun, but once i do, i just let them work and i don't bother them about it

Love mine

Crimson grips LG-405 and she's good to go.

Just got my CCW permit last week and my holster wont be here until this week but I just pocket carry it without any problems.

My 442 came with boot grips. I replaced them with some old school model 36 wood grips, and added a Tyler T Grip adapter.

I've been eyeballing a 442 no lock at the local shop, I was considering adding the pachmayr grips like the one pictured above and a clipdraw, however I am wondering is the front sight even replaceable?

Sorry, Ocelot, I missed your question. Front site on 442 is integral with the barrel and it is not replaceable. Mine is painted red with automotive touch-up paint.
