Is it possible to make an RPK 5.56mm out of a Saiga 20" barrel 5.56mm rifle?

Let's see, you can convert it to traditional pistol grip and stock.

BUT....can the mag-well be converted to take Galil magazines? Can you put a bipod on it, close to the muzzle like a real RPK? Hell, I might as well ask, can you put a real RPK bipod on the Saiga 5.56mm? And, is the Saiga's barrel already heavy barreled?

I don't have a Saiga 5.56mm but if this project would work out and cost less than $1,000 then I will try to go for it.

I know some might say "find an Arsenal RPK-5". No, not for $1,300. And besides, there are no bulgarian magazines out there that hold more than 30 rounds.:D

i've seen them for sale, one at collectors firearms here in houston , was about 1000 bucks. check out fbmg for your various variants.

Negative. I have in my hand a 40-round Bulgarian waffle mag. You can find them online for as low as $25 each. They're just as sturdy and well-built as the 30-rounders.

I have seen the 40 round 5.56 Bulgy mags for sale, but rarely. That caliber RPK is dying for a BETA mag conversion.

You could always turn it into a 5.56mm "Saiganov" and have a pretty decent designated marksman setup.

YES! That's exactly what I want to go for, but in an RPK format.

BTW, I asked the same question in the Saiga Forums and Tony Rumore from Tromix replied that he's going to make RPK's in 5.56mm in 2007! WOOOO-HOOOO!!!:D

I'll just wait then.:D
