Pretty soon here I'll be getting my carry gun (a Heckler & Koch USP Compact in either .40 S&W or .45 ACP) and I've been looking for holsters. So far I've found Holsters by Eric (which I read about here) and Andrew's Custom Leather which I read about on the Something Awful forums. The guys on SA also seem to love Milt Sparks holsters. I guess I have a flare for the dramatic, as custom leather holsters just have a certain appeal to me.

So what I'm asking in my own long-winded way is are there any other great custom leather makers out there that you guys would recommend?

I like Rafter S Gunleather. Priced like production leather, but handmade for you.

Plain cowhide starts at $45, exotics start at $70. I have two sharkskin holsters and a belt.

I've met the guys from Andrews, and seen much of their work. They do fantastic stuff. Avoiding offending Art's Grammaw, ask to see their one-off "Flaming A***ole" holster that they made for a friend. It's both amazing in its build, and funny as all getout.

My choice

There are many fine holsters which will serve you well. I carry an HK USP 45 compact and use a Tucker Texas Heritage IWB. I considered a Milt Sparks Versa Max but wanted it sooner than his current schedule allowed. The Heritage is really working well for me. Just my preference and choice...

I have to put in a good word for Mitch Rosen. I went to his shop in Manchester, got fitted for a belt and checked out all of his holsters. He is a really great guy to deal with. Needless to say his quality is top notch and I walked out with a belt and holster and will be ordering more stuff soon.

I've no experience with leather for a H&K, but I'll second the Milt Sparks. Got two VM-II's and love 'em.

Have also heard very good things about Lou Alessi's stuff, though I've not had the chance to try any.

I met Eric briefly, and have seen his excellent work. I wouldn't hesitate to order from him. I have ordered a couple of holsters from FIST, and have been happy with their quality and price.

We're fortunate in that there are more good holster makers, both in kydex and leather, than I would ever have the money or time to try. However, I'd cast another vote for Milt Sparks. I've always been very pleased with their products.

Bryson...I would like to add this to all the previous posts . There is not much difference in price between some production holsters and most custom leather . The main difference is quality .

The H&K USP line is not problematic to holster like the P7 family. However , I would strongly recommend Lou Alessi , Josh Bulman , Matt Del Fatti , Milt Sparks , Ken Null , Tucker Gunleather , and Gary Brommeland as a few of the best . You will not go wrong with any of these makers . I have leather from all of them and it's top notch . I think Rosen's stuff is overpriced . FIST is second rate and has a poor customer service attitude . I am waiting for my first order from Rafters , and I am not familiar with Andrews .

In general I don't care for Kydex , although I admit it's practical . If you were to ask me, who is the BEST holstermaker at a value price, I wouldn't hesitate to say Lou Alessi . His CQC-S and DOJ holsters in OWBs , and his PCH in an IWB are the pinnacle of the art of holstermaking , at a price on a par with Galco . He is the great innovator making holsters today , with his Talon clips, his pull through snaps , and the new arch based PCH holster that WILL NOT collapse even though it does not have a reinforced mouth .

Whomever you decide on as your holstermaker I urge you to get a good gunbelt at the same time . The performance of the holster , and your comfort and ability to use it will depend on a good belt . It is equally as important , possibly more so than the holster. Personally , I think Lou Alessi makes the best belts in the world , and they cannot be "made" as a gunbelt ...Tom

I've never met Mitch, but have been doing business with him several years. The quality has always been top drawer, and the service is excellent, too.

Well there are a couple more ups for Milt Sparks. Perhaps I'll finally make a call on that one.

Thanks guys, I've bookmarked four sites thanks to this thread. :)

I'm pretty surprised no one has mentioned him before me, but I have to mention Lou Alessi. I'm not sure he makes them for your application, but... I have his CQC/S for 5" 1911, in black (my wife's Christmas gift to me), and it's easily the nicest holster I've ever seen in person. It gives excellent retention and a smooth draw by means of very thoughtful molding, reinforcement, and stitching, with no retention strap or tension screw. It also rides nice and close, discreet but accessible, and the spacing of the snaps distributes the weight, so that you could almost forget you were wearing a full size steel 1911 on your hip. Here's a pic from Lightning Arms' site , who sent mine to my door in 3 days, to arrive on Christmas Eve:

My recommendations would be Horseshoe Leather by Andy Arratoonian, Haugen Handgun Leather by Jerry Lee Evans, and Black Hills Leather by Rudy Lozano. I have several from each. Fit, Finish, Appearance, and Functionality are excellent. :)

Bryson, I have two....Here are a few pictures.

The black one is a Galco Sky Ops. The brown one is a Fist #18 paddle. I like them both very much. Fists are generally a shorter wait than Milt Sparks or Alessi and just as high quality in my opinion.

I disagree with the above on Fist Quality...but have to agree they are very terse in their responses and this is either because they are very busy or just aren't very personable. I can't complain about the Fist quality or the wait time. I don't feel like waiting 4-6 months for one of the others. One month is reasonable.

Once you've found HBE, you no longer have any need to keep looking. I have 2 of Eric's holsters, a mag carrier, and a belt -- and I love them. Grade A products.

Wes :)

About belts: are there any belts that are just simple belts? Most of these custom leather guys have belts that seem more ornamental. Polished brass buckles, etc. The belt I wear now (with nearly everthing except my really nice clothes that'd look good with the aformentioned belts) is a 2-inch Eagle Industries duty belt. It's simple, flat black nylon that just does its job.

I know that a lot of people say that getting a good gun belt is important, how would that duty belt fare? I'm guessing it'd get a thumbs-down from you guys, but I figure I'll ask to make sure.

I also have to put in a good word about Mitch Rosen. I bought a belt and Holster from him in the early 1990's (I don have the holster and gun any more, but I still have the belt). I also had a Milt Sparks Summer Special II, but the Mitch Rosen was better quality (but cost much more too).

I lost one of the screws that held the belt together. 10 years(!!!) later Mitch sent me the screws at no cost to me... it wasn't too expensive, but most business would have charged for the parts.

I am going to get a MR for my next carry gun.

EDITED to be understandable..... Duhh

Good Leather

Matt Del Fatti is the top dog in my book. I've had Alessis, Sparks, Kramers, Tuckers, and mass-produced, semi-custom wares, plus a gaggle of others and nobody comes close to Matt's true custom work.

Bell Charter Oak also makes some damn fine leather for any wheelgun you can possibly own in a myriad of flavors/styles and is affordably priced.
