Cut and crown a barrel - how much $$ ?

What should one expect to pay for a competent cut and crown, 22 in down to 18in? Are there any downsides or dangers in doing this?

A master gunsmith in my state (SC) will do a cut and crown for $75.00.

You may lose a bit of range/velocity in cutting down to 18". If you shoot 100 to 200 yds, prob no big deal.

Usually $50-$60 for a competent job (good crown) in this area.

Are there any downsides or dangers in doing this?

1. Dangers ==> No

2. Downsides ==> Yes. If it's a semi-auto, it may not cycle correctly. And regardless of action type, you will lose some velocity, slightly increase recoil, and significantly increase muzzle blast and flash.

What about a Remington sps varmit 26" to 20" with a tactical stock on it ( probaly bell and Carson or hs precision). Ranges up to 600 yards.

What cartridge? I am assuming 308 or 223. Using most factory loads or even reloads the difference is pretty insignificant down to around 20". Especially the 223. I like shorter barrels, but 20" is about as short as I like for the 308. The 24"-26" barrels will squeeze a little more velocity out of the rounds, but most shooters cannot take advantage of the difference.

With the magnum rounds you really need the longer barrels. You will probably only lose 15-20 fps/inch with the 308 or 223, but up to 50fps/inch for some of the magnums.

I'm thinking 7-08 but maybe .308. The rifle will be a Remington 760, or 7600 if 7-08. The idea is a fast in heavy woods gun for deer, 100 yds and under. Haven't ruled out .35 Rem either. My understanding is that the larger the caliber, the less (proportionally) it will lose in velocity as barrel length is decreased, right? So if say a .308 lost 10% going from 22 to 18, a .243 might lose 15% or more, correct?

$80.00 on the high end here in Illinois.
If it is a simple job, i.e. carbon steel barrel, not chrome lined,etc, price could come down to less than $50.00

anywhere from 40 bucks on up should do it, depends on the crown step/depth, and how good is the dude who does it...

I had just a recrowning done a few years back that ran me $35. I don`t know what extra it would have ran to cut the barrel back too.

Wood stock to syntheitc.. weight diff?

If I swap out a wood stock for a syntheitic one, how much lighter should I expect it to be an average? I know it depends on what rifle, what wood stock and what synthetic stock, but roughly?
