I read the below on another forum and was wondering if anyone's ever done this? It seems to me that it could hurt ya pretty bad doing something like that.

Go buy a cheap pump, saw the barrel off,(keep it legal)that way if it gets confiscated, lost, stolen or rusty you are not out much.If you think you want slugs and dont want to buy them cut a rgeular load almost thru right at the back of the shot charge, this will make an elephant blink. RW

It doesnt sound like a very bright idea to me but. Actully it sounds like a bood way to blow the choke and the end of your barrel off:what:

I suspect the "original" poster meant to cut the hull - not the wad. I use a similar loading; I just use uncut wads.
Federal came out with some turkey ammo that has the wad partially cut as compared to more traditional shotshell loadings. Practically a slug, as the entire shot column is contained.
Shot-slug projectiles can also result from steel shot rusting together, very scary.

Thats exactly what happened to a high school friend of mine in the early 70's on an old J C Higgins pump. I don't recall what choke it had but I did see the aftermath, about a 2 inch split, right down the center of the bead.

Had a Shooting Budd that did exactly that....cut a standard shotshell almost all the way through, behind the shot charge.

Well, anyone remember the various cartoons that show the barrel all flared out, almost like a seperated 'blunderbuss" barrel?

That is what happened when he ran that load of #2's though the full choke...

A nominal 12 ga bore is .729" before it even gets to the choke constriction.

A 12 ga shell measures about .805" or thereabouts.

Cut the shell and shoot it?
Heck you don't have to be no math whizz or gun expert to figure that one out.

I've run into people who've claimed to do this. I'm not one to call a man a liar unless I'm certain sure, but this "trick" certainly strains any credibility that a person may have.

rcmodel says it pretty well. To carry it a little farther, if the shell seperates as supposedly happens, what propels the hull down the barrel? The crimp is supposed to hold? If the crimp opens, as it will, now nothing is pushing the hull. Stuck hull, next shot is gonna be a good show.

This has been discussed before. I understand that some of the Brits do it because they can't buy slugs or buckshot.

As Dave says, it's not recommended.

With all that said, I used to do it when I was a kid. The trick is to cut almost all the way through just below the shot charge. I was using a Winchester model 42 .410, and paper shells when I did it. The gun was never harmed, but it was a fixed choke. I was 15. I did lots of other inadvisable things too.

On the last discussion one of our Brit friends responded and said he does it with plastic shells, but since I have lots of slugs and buckshot, I don't feel the need.

I can see where cutting below the powder charge would be problematic. The charge would probably severely deform the plastic around it and the payload would be very long. I can also see where screw in chokes could be problematic.
