Cutting down barrel to 18 myth?

I've read a couple of articles written by folks who plotted their results as they cut a long barrel back one inch at a time. What's most interesting is in every case there's a specific load that will actually develop a higher velocity with the barrel one inch shorter than the previous load. The trend in general is of course that you lose velocity with decreased barrel length but all the articles I've read determined that it is absolutely not a linear relationship between barrel length and velocity. Personally I think it's interesting that there's a contingent of shooters who favor the shorter barrels despite the velocity loss. It seems odd that folks who chase high BC's would elect to choose theoretical accuracy increases at the cost of the velocity that's making their BC's happen.

I don't doubt the long range benefits of a longer barrel one bit and maybe I should have explained myself a little better. I don't shoot BR so my stuff is "real life" and has a sling so it gets carried a LOT and shot a little, mostly at the range. At my normal hunting ranges <125 yards 50 fps isn't going to be missed......

with a rem 7600 carbine in 3006(18.5"),shooting 57grs imr 4350 with a 165 nosler bt bullet, useing a crony load does 2710fps, in a rem 700 3006(22") the same load does 2831fps. eastbank.
