Found a Mountain Rifle in 58 caliber. It's one of the ones made in Spain, not in the US. Asking price is $300. How is the quality of these as compared to the ones made in USA? I think it was a very well done kit gun.

$300 is market price for a .58 CVA Mountain Rifle. They are difficult to find.

The Spanish barrels are generally regarded as lower quality than the US-made barrels, but I've never seen a side-by-side comparison that upheld that impression. Also owners of the Spanish barrels are well satisfied with performance. Finally, finding a US-made barrel on a .58 Mountain Rifle is very difficult - they're quite rare. I wouldn't hold off on buying one with a Spanish barrel.

If you decide not to buy it, send me a PM.

ditto! If it is in flint, it will even bring a premium. After the few earliest years, CVA at least got the barrels right for round ball shooting, even the Spanish made barrels. The breech system and drum on the percussion is quite difficult to deal with if there is a need to remove them. They are threaded together in an interlocking configuration.

Fortunately the need to remove the breech almost never occurs.

That is low $$

i'd have put it at $375. Maybe a bit more if it has a curly maple stock.

the spanish barrels are just as good as the douglas barrels. Once CVA stopped production on the douglas barrel, they actually went and used the douglas design on the inside of the barrel.

I decided not to buy it, I've really been looking for a Springfield 1861, or a 32 Crockett. Used to have a Crockett, and have regretted selling it for years. Only so much money to spend or guns I would trade so decided to pass. I think Mykeal wants it though!
