Help with Hawken barrel replacement

How's it going folks?

I have a Charles Daly Hawken that was made in Spain that desperately needs a new barrel. The gun was left with family for many years, and they neglected clean it; now it's rusted and pitted.

My question is: will the Green Mountain barrels fit this species of Hawken?

I'm looking at the 28" fast twist barrels. The 28" rusted barrel is 1" across the flats. Some websites that sell the Green Mountain barrels say that they will not fit CVA, Traditions, or rifles made in Spain. Can I modify the rifle to accept the new barrel? Mine is of the one wedge pin variety.

Any help would be appreciated.

You might try to find a CVA hawken barrel. I don't know for sure but suspect it's the same company.

Modifying the rifle to accept a non-fitting barrel is going to be way more trouble than it's worth, IMO. you can ge a complete rifle used for $150 or less.

Is it rusted on the outside only? You can easily file down the flats and refinish it... if the bore is tolerable that's what I'd do.

It seems that the Spanish Daly barrels were originally made by Ardesa which also makes Traditions.

The critical barrel dimensions need to be matched up, such as the hooked breech with the correct breech plug, the wedge pin, and the drum/nipple.
Or the parts for those items need to be fitted.
Barrel makers and gun builders can help to fit a custom barrel or barrel blank, or try outfits to see if they have the correct diameter barrel and parts to fit, even if that means utilizing the original breech plug w/hook.

Deer Creek (765-525-6181) has many CVA parts and sells Traditions.
Sitting Fox muzzle loaders may be an outfit to ask about having Spanish barrel blanks in stock and fitting it.

Thanks for the info.

Sitting Fox has some gorgeous rifles! I'll have to give them a call and see if they will sell me a barrel or finish the entire gun. It's kind of a beater considering it was covered in camo tape when I got it. Later on down the road I'd like to buy one of their finished guns.

This rifle has sentimental value; I hunted with this gun when I was a teenager, and that's really the only reason why I'm looking at sinking money into it.

The inside of the bore is so rusted that it is badly pitted.

You can always get Bobby Hoyt of Der Freischutz Shoppe in Pennsylvania to bore out and reline that barrel. Cheat. Have him line it for a minie ball. You'll be able to shoot out to 500 yards with accuracy. No patching required either.

Yeah... Gary's idea is probably the best if you are attached to that rifle. Have them bore it out to .54 or .58.

If you can take some detailed pics of the breech hook, nipple, etc. you might be able to get someone to match you up a CVA barrel or something. I'd be surprised if another brand didn't have the same barrels, and usually replacement barrels are relatively cheap. You might check around your local classifieds and stuff.

I mentioned Sitting Fox because he previously had some CVA barrel blanks in stock.
But reboring the barrel is also a great idea.
