CVA scout v2 45-70

Hey all,
Hope everyone's feeling good.
I got a rifle, it's a single shot straight wall chambered gun to comply with Illinois hunting laws. I could have used my Henry but figured it was a good excuse to get a new rifle.
I got this thing

I've cast and loaded for 45-70 a while and am comfortable with its trajectory in the area I hunt and the power is easily enough for anything roaming the Midwest .

Rifle is nice and tight. Very tight. If the action isn't closed briskly , the hammer doesn't seem to cock. If closed firmly it will cock & fire reliably , I opened and closed the action several times and it seems to be smoothing out. I expected this sort of thing and I'm confident it'll be completely fine after I can get some rounds through it.
Overall I'd say my initial impression is very good for the price. Finish is excellent and it seems to be a sturdy piece of hardware.

I'll start load development this week, I'm thinking I will use the 350 (?) gr barnes tsx bullets I've got laying around for hunting loads and I'll put some of my regular 405 gr rnfp cast loads through just to see how it does.

I'll need to mount some sort of optic , no iron sights on this one. I've got a cheap 3-9x ? Bushnell on my ruger 77/357 that doesn't belong there so I'll just repurpose it for load development and shop for a proper scope (for both) -- suggestions welcome .

Need a good sling too. You guys like those split slings that you can wear like a backpack? Looks goofy but effective but I don't know, I'm not a rifle guy. Much more of a revolver guy & lever action wanna be. Any suggestions on my path forward is good. Just want a 100 yard thumper that could do 200 yards if need be and the stars align.

Mostly just wanted to show you folks my new hunting rifle and talk about it some.

I wouldn’t mind having A few of those in different calibers. Im Pretty sure the lock is just wearing in with the action. Let us know how it shoots. I bet that will kick like a mule being synthetic.

My CVA Scout TD in .44 Magnum had a small burr on the lock which caused it to stick. I polished it gently and now it locks up smoothly. It is still very, very tight and sometimes takes some finger muscle to unlock. I got my .44 for a 100 yard rifle and that it does quite adequately. I am sure your .45-70 can reach out to 200 yards and beyond depending upon the load.

Nice rifle. I am a bit jealous. I have a handicapped rifle in 45-70 but can't use it here in southern Michigan. Along with being a straight wall cartridge, we also have a maximum case length requirement, which leaves the 45-70 excluded.

Picked up one in 44 mag. Have a Handi in 45-70.
I'm going lead in both. 429244 gas check and the 330 grain Gould hollow point if I can locate a mould. Sadly, doubt my knees will let me do it next week.
