Hey all,
Hope everyone's feeling good.
I picked up this thing-

Tough to get one, sold out everywhere so I had to buy online, pay to ship, pay for the transfer ect. turned into a little more expensive than I wanted to spend but not bad anyway.

I had a 3-9× 40 bushnell scope laying around that I had been using for load development on my ruger 77/357. Only had low scope rings but it seemed to fit fine, until I pulled the trigger, hammer swing up and wedged under the scope body- whooops. So went looking for medium height 1" rings and found a company called dnz sells one piece scope mounts for cva rifles. Nice. Found it on Amazon and they had one available "used, like new" and it was 1/3 the price. Ordered it and was not disappointed, didnt look to have ever been mounted and all the hardware was there.

Put the scope on, cleaned the bore and waited for the weekend. I had a good amount of 45-70 cartridges loaded and figured I'd just break it in and try it out with some trapdoor loads, 405 grain rnfp hi tek coated bullet over 32 grains of imr4198. Before I went to the range I eyeball bore sighted the rifle by just looking at a rock in the backyard through the bore and adjusting the scope to match, not great but here are my first 10 shots- 50 yards, 35° f , slight breeze (sorry, pictures sideways)

A little high and right so I twisted the turrets a little and took 10 more.

A little right so I gave it a little to the left

Pulled 1 left but it walked right in there.
Fourth group of 10 at 50 yards looked like this

A little low but looking good. I was getting dripped on from the roof over the shooting range and getting a little fatigued .

Decided it was close enough, I'd shoot 2 groups at 100 yards and call it a day.

Oh, that's kinda bad. I will blame myself for running out of steam but main issue is the scope was not clear at all, really tough to get a clear picture in the conditions and this was best I could manage, not so good.

I tried a 10 shot group of my typical lever action load too, 38.5 grains of imr4198 and same 405 grain bullet.

I was all over the place. I marked the target "tired", 60 rounds of 45-70 from the bench in an hour is physically demanding for me. I'm 38 and work a blue collar job but it took the fight right out of me , I was trying to finish quickly because I had a lot to do today and range time was snuck in between everything else.

Overall I'll say the cva is exceptional, I blame myself and the scope for the poor groups at 100 yards . I plan to replace the scope with something much better and take my time next trip out with it. Overall in very happy with this hunting rifle and can't wait to get it settled in and killing some deer.

Thanks for reading!

I had the 44 mag version, and 60 thru that wasn't bad, but 60 of 45-70 would be something all together different. And fighting the scope on top of it, the results are fine. Try it a different day, bet you you'll be a lot better.

Good thing those weren't factory. You'd have to take out a second mortgage.
I recently bought a Scout in 44 mag. Looking forward to next year deer season. It resides with my other single shots, Henry 357, Two Contender carbines, and an NEF 45-70. Funny, I was in the shop where I used to work and a guy came in and asked if anyone reloaded 45-70. I said I did, hesitantly as I was afraid he'd ask me to load for him. He took me out to his car and gave me 200 cases, forty loaded rounds and five boxes of commercial 405 grain bullets. Wouldn't take a penny.
I've shared some with my bog bore fruends.

Nice! Yes, I would blame the last 2 targets on fatigue. Because you were crunched for time, and given your environment, it almost always shows up on the target.

32grn IMR4198 and a cast 405 is very nearly my .45-70 load... but I'm shooting it out of a 14# Pedersoli with a 32" barrel, not a light break-action.

B, now I'm glad I didn't join you yesterday or you would have had me shooting it too! Nice looking gun and yes we will get together to shoot soon. What scope did you have on it and what are you looking to change it to?

Next you keep shooting them heavies and will will definitely have to get out and mine that berm. Nice Shootin.
