I have an older inline CVA that is accurate as all get out (maybe I got lucky with a $99 gun) and I like it a lot, but taking the whole thing apart to clean it after each outing is getting really old.:cuss: I will hunt with that this season, but next season I want to switch to a break action, inline. I have narrowed the choices to a CVA Wolf (same barrel that I have now but break action), or a Traditions Buckstalker. Both have been around for a while so I am pretty sure you fine folks have shot them and have some opinions. If it helps you out, I generally site in at 75 but limit my shots to about 50-60 yards and use 100 grn pyrodex charges pushing 350 grn Hornady FPB slugs. I will scope it because I just like scopes. I know different people have different opinions and I want to hear them because, after all, that's what forums are for. Thanks in advance.

Well... since you asked...

I know different people have different opinions and I want to hear them because, after all, that's what forums are for. Thanks in advance.

Get a Hawken and nix the scope since you're limiting yourself to 50-60yrds. If yer gonna shoot "modern"... stuff a cartridge in the breech and be done with it. :D :neener:

stiriin the pot are ya :D
Here let me help ya okeedokeee .

Just kidding , actualy I do have an opinion on his question .
I totally understand wanting to make more time to wash you car , pet your dog , etc , etc, etc , so the easier the gun is to clean , the more time you have . I understand.
BP as a whole isn't a fast sport . Albeit , shooting the modern In-line is much faster than traditional , pop some Pyrodreck poop nuggets down the bore, ram home a plastic coated bullet , and shoot a primer into the mix ..
Now if'n a guys real smart he'd get a TC that says you aint gotta clean between shots for 1,000 rounds . BUT , you still have to clean the gun when your done . :D
Relax and breathe , slow down , enjoy your cleaning and the problem is solved. It aint the gun , its you . You don't need another In-line, you just need a better attitude about cleaning . And tis true , this BP thing might not be for you ? But then again it takes just as long to clean a modern gun or longer . Nothing good comes from going too fast , ask my gal .

Jaeger , slow down :D

maybe i should clarify a little... it's not necessarily the time, it's just a pain to get that end cap cramed down over the spring that drives the firing pin forward. I've sat down next to friends with break actions who just sat their shaking their heads at the myriad steps required to clean it. Time isn't a factor but ease is. Not to mention i'm downright meticulous when it comes to cleaning, so if I had the break action I wouldn't have as many crevaces to reach into and threads to clear gunk out of. I've been shooting BP for a while and it IS for me, but why not make it easier if one has the time and funding to do so? And let's be honest, who doesn't want an excuse for another rifle?

Works for me

as long as it works for you :D
I have dreamt up lesser excuses , please post pics of your new rifle , hee hee hee :D

back to the subject at hand

anyone who has shot one or both rifles, let me know what you think and which way i should go.

This thread about the Wolf shows that they can shoot really well:

http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/black-powder/301367-wolf-muzzleloader.html

On Page 12 of the Wolf owner's manual, it shows that the firing pin assembly has more small parts and I don't know how frequently these would need to be cleaned.

This PDF manual will take a minute or 2 to load:

http://www.cva.com/pdfs/Optima_Wolf_Manual.pdf

I'm not sure if the Wolf has a safety switch or not, but if it doesn't then when hunting the hammer would need to be cocked just before taking the shot.
Every gun has it's advantages and disadvantages. :)
