Rain. Rain. More rain. Had intended to sight in and do some serious MOA shooting with the new CZ-452 this weekend. Weather didn't cooperate. My first frustration was a magazine feed problem. I had difficulty using the internet to access the CZ thread on RimFireCentral to figure out exactly what the problem fix was. My HughesNet sat link was mostly on the fritz due to the rain. Went out to inspect the receiver and it was, literally, waterlogged. So I could only download very slowly and could not upload files. I eventually fixed the magazine - did some adjustment bends on the magazine follower and got the rounds feeding smoothly without dinging the tip. This morning, I got a friend with a pick up truck to help me haul the bench I had made down the mountain to the range area we use, only to find out that what was represented as 100 yards (stepped off) was in fact 85 yards when measured by laser. So I couldn't shoot 100 yard targets (until I get busy with the chain saw, blade trimmer and bush hog to gain another 15 yards of useable range. And after all of that, I ended up shooting in an intermittent, light drizzle. Despite the rain, I did manage to get several sub-1-inch groups. Can't qualify as official "MOA" shooting because of the 85 yard range, but I do feel like I am making progress. The trigger has been lightened to 1.3# pull and I have determined that the rifle shoots CCI 20 grain 17HMR better than the 17 grain CCI or either the 17 gr or 20 gr Federal rounds. I didn't get to try the Winchester 17 or 20 grain rounds yet. My best group in suboptimal conditions was 0.86 in, CTC at 85 yards with CCI 20 grain. The 17 grain ballistic tips may do a bit better in dry conditions with no wind. Maybe next weekend I will get another chance to try for 100 yard MOA groups.

Main thing....... you were out slingin' lead!

Gettin' in some trigger time! A rainy day at the range is light years ahead of a perfect day at work, at home, at school, at the inlaws(well, we knew that...right?), at... just about anyplace! hehehe :neener:

Sounds like you did pretty well! How do you like the ol' 452... great little gun arnt they! :D

Great little shooter. Needs a bit more break in time -- the bolt is still just a wee bit stiff. Lightening the trigger spring makes all the difference. I can't imagine that any nicer trigger is really needed, once the spring is lightened, at least for 95% of folks who might shoot the CZ. The after-market custom trigger does look interesting, though.

For the time being, I am spending the extra $ laying in a bulk supply of 17HMR rounds. One thing I would like to have, and perhaps it sounds a bit odd, is a 3-round magazine that fits flush with the underside of the forearm. I keep bumping my wrist on the stock magazine when I bring the rifle up to shoot off-hand. My natural rest position for this little rifle is off the palm of my hand, it seems is just in front of the trigger guard. I think this one is destined to slay many furry rodents come fall.

That is the cone of the antenna of the HughesNet receiver. The signal bounces off the dish into the conical antenna which is about 5-6 inches in diameter. It has a sealed, clear plastic cover. This one had about an inch and a half of water accumulated inside the antenna cone, and the surface was thoroughly fogged and beaded with water. My signal crapped out even after the rain stopped. Gee, maybe it is the water inside that's the problem.

I'm not sure that the legs are stout enough on that bench. One medium sized elephant steps on that, you could have a problem. ;)

Stout legs

Hey, watch it! I modeled that bench after my wife's legs (LOL)!

Well, I had the scrap lumber on hand and that 8-ft beam was left over from a deck project when we built the home. It may look ugly, but it is rock solid and gloriously steady.

. . . and I was just looking at the CZ magazine. I don't see any reason not to buy a second magazine and cut it down to size. As I think about it, the spring doesn't even have to be shortened, as the 3-round load will be under no more tension than the standard magazine with a 5-round load, no? The only trick will be putting the flange on the base of the cut down magazine. I am thinking you cut the magizine about a quarter inch long, then bend that outward to form an oversized flange, then do some careful grinding to size. Might need to shorten the longer leg of the magazine follower a bit, though.
