Is it safe to carry a CZ-75/85 with the hammer down? I'm afraid to carry "cocked and locked" in all situations, but it would be nice to have the 15+ firepower of the CZ.

Yes you can carry the CZ-75B in DA mode with the hammer down. Its designed for both DA or C&L carry and the 75B has a firing pin block for an extra measure of safety. I carry mine on the half cock notch to give a slightly better first shot DA trigger pull.

Matter of fact, most CZs that have a decocker where the hammer-drop lever only brings the hammer down to the half-cock notch.

On non-decock models, you'll have to manually lower the hammer on a loaded chamber. I know this makes a lot of guys have kittens, but if you've ever owned a revolver with an exposed hammer, it's part of the manual of arms. Just be careful and go slow. If you're worried, get one of those "safe direction" armor pads and point the muzzle at it. That way, if you were to have an ND, no harm done.

Otherwise, I recommend a decock model, such as the CZ-75BD and the P01. The decocker isn't as lefty-friendly as the ambi safety, and they don't have ambi slide releases, but I don't think there's much requirement for quick and easy combat-decocking.

'Cause if you drop the mag and eject the round, you now have an empty chamber. To carry a CZ-75 or a CZ-85 with the hammer down (for a double action first shot) with a round in the chamber, you must manually lower the hammer.

Whis is exactly what you're supposed to do.

Bingo. If you want to carry with the hammer down for a DA first-shot trigger pull, you simply decock to the half-cock notch. That gives you two blocks against an AD (hammer block and firing pin block) and a better trigger pull.

Thanks for the quick replies. I also went on line to the CZ page (manual) this afternoon for a refresher. Maybe it's the translation from Chech, but your explanations are MUCH more reassuring:)

Anyways, I'm comfortable with the process of decocking, I was mostly worried about the "hammer-block" safety. There are lots of times I would rather carry the CZ, if only for the increased firepower (number of rounds) over my Kahr or Taurus PT-1911.

Thanks again,
