I've been pondering my next gun purchase for some time now....I've really been turned on to the CZ P-01 lately (largely due to the glowing reviews here on THR)

well I went to the local gunshop this weekend and they didn't have a P-01, they did however have a SP-01....now I have no experience with decocker pistols so I asked the store owner to demonstrate the decock feature for me.....he proceeded to decock the gun and the hammer fell to the half-cock position....I thought that was strange, asked him about it, but he really couldn't answer why it didn't decock "all the way"

so my question is whether or not this is normal....also, do all decocker pistols decock to half-cock or is this a CZ thing....thanks for your help

I've got two decocker type pistols: a CZ P-01 and a Browning BDM. The P-01 sends the hammer to half-cock. The BDM has a slide-release / decocker, and it does the same.

The CZ 75 P-01 is available only with a (single-sided) decocker. The CZ 75 SP-01 is available with an ambidextrous manual safety (CZ 75 SP-01) or ambidextrous decocker (CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical). The P-01 is a compact with forged aluminum frame, meaning that it is lighter, and the SP-01 is a full-size pistol with steel frame, meaning that it has heft. Both are excellent pistols.

About decocking, many pistols decock to half-cock position, and how far away from the firing pin the half-cock position is depends on the manufacturer. For CZ pistols, it seems to be further away than other manufactures.

ok, so is there any need to decock the hammer all the way??

sorry, again I'm new to decockers

so I guess you are supposed to carry at half-cock with a DA initial trigger pull?

You don't want the gun to "completely decock", because you would be essentially, firing the gun. ;)

Decocking to the half cock notch allows a shorter first trigger pull than the full DA one while still being much safer in the holster than fully cocked and unlocked. A compromise.

Decocking to the half cock position has two advantages:
1. Hammer is not riding on the firing pin. Good safety feature.
2. The double action pull is shorter. Try firing the gun with the hammer all the way down then try it from the half cock. Noticeable difference.

so I guess you are supposed to carry at half-cock with a DA initial trigger pull?

Yes, that is correct. As others have said, the initial DA trigger pull is shorter at the half cock position. Its intended to be carried at the half cocked position.

WHAT A SUPRISE..CZ SP01

I've been a glock owner for about 12 years and
a firm beliver in Glocks performance and reliability.
However I just purchased a CZ SP01 and what a
gun, accurate, steady, low recoil, lots of capacity
15R and 16R CZ 75 mags fit flush and all my Glock 21
leather and Fobus kydex fits great. Do yourself a
favor, the decock system works well and the gun
is a great buy.

does anyone know what the trigger pull/weight is from half-cock??...I just wonder if it might be safer to go with a DAO like the Glock 19 or 17 because everyone is saying the DA pull from half-cock is lighter

The pull from decock on a CZ isn't much if any lighter than its full DA pull, it's just shorter. I'd guess around 10 lbs or so on my PCR. It's still heavier than the glock trigger pull.
