Here's another CZ sniper, the VZ 54/91 sniper issued to Czech boarder guards in the 1990's. Based on the Mosin action, it uses a Soviet PSO-1 sniper scope with IR detector. Has the adjustable stock and butt pad used on others of the period (and many today) but uses the walnut stock - which is pretty heavy. Uses Mauser type rear sights and a Mauser-type front sight and hood.

Interesting rifle and optics. I have a definite affinity for CZ long guns, and it certainly appears that's a nice one! If it's yours, then I am definitely envious. What caliber is the rifle? Is this a collector's piece or something you occasionally shoot? Either way, very nice.

The caliber is standard Russian 7.62x54r and as I understand it, the Czechs wanted it to use the same optics as the SVD. Of course, that means it will take anything that can be slid onto the standard rail. The Soviet PSO scope is more than adequate for target shooting and certainly would work fine for hunting. It has a Czech bipod around somewhere. It uses a Mosin action.

It was eventually replaced by the SSG-3000, which the current CZ-750 gives a good run for its money.

According to Vic from mosinnagant.net "The rifle now retired from military serve have found their way into the surplus market was they are prized rifles in shooting sport clubs and with military and police competitions. Exact numbers of the Vz54/91 rifles are not known but the rifles...are highly sought after by shooting enthusiasts."

An interesting general category of rifles, though -- old military sniper rifles of 50's 60's vintage. Never really wanted a Mosin, but I'd have to say that given the opportunity to buy/trade/steal one, I think I'd jump at the chance for one of the Czech vz.54 Snipers. I love the woodwork on yours, for sure. Congrats.

For a good bit less than one of the Czechs, one can get a Finnish M28/76 which can be an outstanding rifle. This one from an auction site is even built on an antique receiver - one can get it straight to his house.

When I sold of the bulk of my collection, I kept only a very few pieces. At its height, I had 60 Mosins, mostly Finns. But, I could get them at the time for $50-$80 each. My Westinghouse - the first Mosin I bought - was $50. A year-and-a-half ago I sold off the bulk of the collection to buy a house in the country. Now I have 5, the two shown, said Westinghouse, an M91/59 and a Tikka M91/30.
