I finally got out to the range to test out my new CZ 452 Varmint and I had pretty high hopes for it. The gun in question is shown and described here.

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=120814

Range conditions were a little windy and very cold 32-39 degrees. The temp really took a dive towards the end of my shooting day and my shaking hands really hurt my accuracy as did the wind when it really started to pick up.

For my first time out with the gun I sighted in and only used Winchester 40 grain Dynapoints because I had heard they shoot well in the 452s and I like to sight in with bulk or cheaper ammo and then fine tune with better ammo later.

Results were as follows.

50 Yards 3 shot group that can be covered with a dime.

50 Yards 5 shot group that can be covered with a dime.

50 Yards 5 shot group that can be covered with a penny.

100 Yards 4 shot group that can be covered with a penny. 5th round was a bit left as this was a sighting in group and I moved the sights to the right.

100 Yards three shot and two shot group. Also part of my sighting in. Both can be covered with a dime or smaller.

My best 100 yard group. Once sighted in this is a 3 shot group centered just a hair above the center X. The group is smaller than a dime.

All in all the firearm functioned flawlessly although it did dump cases to the left from time to time, mostly if I didn't work the bolt very positively. Working the bolt with a solid positive effort through the cases to the right just fine.

What I have learned.

1)Wind plays hell with .22 Long Rifle Bullets.

2)Shooting a .22 Long Rifle at 100 yards is no joke and very hard.

3)High powered scopes make it look like you are shooting with an earthquake going on. I can see this teaching me breath and trigger control

4)Cold weather and frozen fingers does not help trigger control one darn bit.

5)People are much better shots then I and I continue to have the utmost respect for those folks.

6)I have not given Bushnell scopes enough respect. This 4200 has amazing light transmission and was bright even at the 32X magnification level. This seems like a very good scope.

7)The most important thing of all..........good day, bad day, cold day, warm day.....anyday shooting is a GREAT DAY. :D

Mine likes Winchester Powerpoints and CCI Velocitors. The CCI Quikshok was all over the target.

You shot those groups with a .22LR at 100 yards?????

I can once in a while, on a good day, shoot groups almost that good with a .223 and handloads. I have never shot groups near that good with a .22LR, even at 50 yards.

Good shooting.

Ahhh but you don't see the shotgun sized patterns that came before and after those groups. Those were my best of the day. Also the first three were shot at 50 Yards.

At 50 yards with my custom 10/22 I can consistently put 5-10 rounds into a shoot and see "dot". I am not consistent with the CZ yet.

Believe me I have seen some folks who can shoot and they amaze me. I pretty much suck but am lucky enough to have some good days.

Good shooting.

I shot 2.27" 5 rounds at 200 yards with my Kimber last year in an online match here in Canada last year; rimfires can be every bit as good as centerfire and even better. Even better, the three shot group could be entirely covered by a dime at 200! The next two opened it up to 2.27". I was glad to hear someone say the 452 liked Velocitors, they are my favorite .22LR round, and I'm buying a 452 now. The above groups from the Kimber were also with Velocitors.

Kimber at 50 yards with Dynamit Nobel:

(I'll try and dig up a pic of the 200 yard target for you guys too, it's amazing)

Long range rimfires.

I think too many people think of the rimfire .22 as a 50 yard max round. I like to stretch mine out to 100 on a regular basis. The main reason I do is this teaches wind doping well and the 40 gr bullet at 100 yds. is a good simulator for the .223 at 300+.

Whats so amazing about a .22 shooting small groups. My CZ will put 20 bullets into one ragged hole at 50 mtrs and the same into less than an inch at 100 mtrs.

CZ's are the best value out there in my opinion. I have a 452 Special and it was a tack driver right out of the box. I have one CZ now and plan on increasing my inventory in the near future.

I bought one of the CZ-452 Specials before everybody knew what a CZ-452 really was and I have been super happy with it. I can get .5-.75 groups at 50 yards with just about every type of cheap plinking ammo and a $75 scope. Not bad for a rig that costs less than $300 new.

The Specials are so nice that I wouldn't mind having one of the Americans to go with it. IMHO, it is almost as nice as the Kimbers.

I have a Tula T-07 which I regularly shoot at 100+ yards. I have a 1.01" group of 5 shots at one hundred and I have made first try head shots on finch at 125 - 150 yds. I agree that the .22LR is a great tool for teaching wind dope and range estimation. I do all of my shooting with a pawnshop takeoff bushnell
3-9 X 40. Keep in mind almost all of my shooting is done prone with a bipod or sling supported offhand. Frequently I find myself watching other shooters who are significantly better than myself. It really gives me something to strive for without it costing me a fortune. Keep up the good work!

Here we go guys, a .22LR at 200 yards :) Note the barely over dime sized three shot group.

PS, that's 2.27" :)

It was a Kimber of Oregon SVT (Short Varmint Target) and the ammo was CCI Velocitors.
