D.O.B. of my python?

I've got on lay-a-way a 6 inch blued python with the wood grips. Action is SUPERB even for a python in my opinion. Very Very good condition and I only paid $585.00 for it. Anyway I see on my receipt the the serial number is 1932xx. Anyone say when it was made?

Both the "x"s are numbers. Could the guy not have written it right on my receipt? If all six are numbers then what would that mean? I know it's the older looking style with wood grips and blued finish.

Wow I never realized it would be that old of a model. The serial number on the receipt is 6 digits did you realize that? I saw on some webisite that I just looked at, that the serial number range didn't fit in any of the years so I was begining to wonder. Can you explain why mine has one extra number?

it was written down wrong

The first number was a "V", not a one. I guess it's a 78-79 then.

Oh well, still an excellent piece. Didn't buy it for the year.

where is a reference that gives Python serial numbers? Colt autos are easy, but I've never found one for the revos.

There are two references.
First is this web site:

The numbers here end with 1978.

The other source is the book "Colt: An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson.
This book is considered by Colt to be the "official" history of Colt firearms.
This book pictures every Colt firearm made from 1836 to 1985.

In the back of the book are complete production serial numbers for ALL Colt firearms up to 1985.

After 1985, there are no publicly available numbers, and you have to call Colt for a production date.

Wilson also sells a small booklet with just the number info.

just got it out of lay-a-way

Just picked it up and my wife even likes this gun and she's not a gun nut. I recently got her a superb .38 taurus snubby to carry but she didn't want to turn loose of my new python. Action is like a fine swiss watch. Can't wait to shoot it on Christmas. I'm dreaming of a noisy Christmas. Thank God I live in the country.
