I always prefer double action in a handgun. I used to run occasional "mock" panic drills with unloaded handguns. I would take a nap and set the alarm. When the alarm went off, I would reach for the handgun and aim/point the gun toward the bedroom door as if I had to defend myself and then proceed to fire the handgun. I learned alot when I used to own and relied on 1911's for this role.
More often than not I would not remember to disengage the thumb safety or my grip wouldn't fully depress the grip safety rendering the gun unable to be used. I know...practice, practice, practice; I did with thousands of rounds at the range. The mentality at the range and the split second reaction when doing panic drills are 2 different behaviors.
I prefer revolvers; I prefer double action; the hammer can be cocked if time allows; there are no safeties on revolvers to contend with; when I owned DA/SA autoloaders, the safety was kept off and the first trigger pull replicated a double action revolver
This works for me and may not be your way of doing things
