Let me say first that I have large calibers both in revolvers & autoloaders, but have acquiesced to the arguements of using the larger bores in the home. The big-booming noise, blinding muzzle flash, bullets through your neighbor's sheet rock, on & on. My question deals with the mode one leaves their gun while asleep...I find more assurance in grabbing the gun and not fiddling around with a safety while say in a "cock-n-lock" mode. I certainly don't want to jack the slide while coming out of a sleep. A stiff DA pull would not be an accident while half-asleep and in my case using the S&W 547 revolver. I know with a 110% certainty it will fire where aimed...BTW, I use Fed 9mm+ 105 EFMJ for my home defense....What mode is your nightstand pistol/revolver in?

I couldn't agree more. The gun is a Smith 620, and I like the DA mode. I want that stiff DA pull because I know me when I'm awakened in the middle of the night. I'm up and moving, but not entirely awake.

Because of concerns with overpenetration in my home, it's stoked with .38+P. It shoots to point and I KNOW it's gonna work every time. If by some chance it didn't, I'd just pull the trigger again.:D

While my carry gun is almost always some variant of the 1911, both night stands are loaded with DA revolvers. I have a Colt Trooper MKIII .357 loaded with 158 gr. Hornady XTP HPs and my wife has Colt Police Positive .38 loaded with 158 gr. Federal Nyclad HPs. They're simple and I don't have to worry about rotating magazines. We sleep well :D

Ruger GP 100 w/ Glaser Blue tip safety slugs in a fingertip combo safe (We have kids around).

Here's the safe . . .

3" 625-7 chambered in 45 colt and
loaded with Fed 225gr LSWCHP's.

3" charter arms bulldog chambered
in 44spl,load with 200gr winchester
silvertips.

S&W 4" 686 loaded w/ 158 gn Gold Dots, one reload in a speedloader. Still has the stock trigger, so DA pull is plenty heavy enough to be safe for a (possibly) panicked but still 1/2 asleep old fart.

Sig P229 .40, fully loaded with one in the chamber, de-cocked, in holster with retention strap, placed under pillow next to me.

HK Tactical .45. TLR1 light attached, loaded and decocked with 12 rounds of 230gr Golden Sabers, 2 extra loaded mags close by. I love the 12 round capacity mags.

I prefer a double action .38spl or .357 magnum revolver. If you were to get into a fight with an intruder who is trying to disarm you, you can just grab the cylinder to render the weapon inoperable until you can regain control of it.

I keep my target revolver in the nightstand. A 6" K38 3T 14-4 loaded with Silvertips (for the wherewolves :) )

crazed_ss: I dunno about you bro but I'd grab the shotgun first. 12 ga hits twice as hard as a .44 mag but won't go through your house and into the neighbor's.

Plus, it makes a nice club if you run out of ammo.
