Daddy, why aren't we going hunting?

Only one to deal with?

I've got 20 foxhounds, I think their happy to rest for about the first week, then they get crazy. We try and run them once a month or so in a local fox pen to keep them in shape.

Thanks for the compliments. I won't tell him what you wrote, though. He's cocky enough already.

Holy crap! They probably don't sleep on the couch in the living room like our couple of dogs, though...:D

Easy solution, teach him to fish.
lol

We have been having a coyote problem lately, and last night I woke up to barking dogs and got the spot light.

One of our jack russell terriers had gotten out and was pacing back and fourth near the chicken pen standing guard (he had to get over or under (still not sure which) a 5 ft fence to do this mind you).

The other dogs were barking in protest to his new found freedom.

hunting cycle (deer)

well son, during the end of the cold time of the year, the deer with horns mount the smaller deer without horns, this starts a chain. soon the small deer has a baby deer in her belly and the horned deer loses his horns making him undesireable:neener:, then the mama deer gives birth to the baby deer (bambi if you will) and has to spend the rest of the year taking care of the baby.. it isnt until hunting season starts again that the baby is ready to be on its own and we have to do our part to keep the population under control again.. This, my son, is the cycle of hunting....:D

He might like fishing... Hmmm...

How do I keep him from getting hooked, though?:)

Those eyes will give you a LOT of information...

...and I know the feeling.

Sometimes it DOES take their minds off hunting if ya teach 'em about fly fishing...

Life is better with a Vizsla...

I had been thinking about getting a viszla. I am worried that I will not be able to provide them with enough exercize. I work all day and have two young ones to take care of when at home. I was going to get a lab instead. WHat do you think?

I think that, if you have any such doubts whatsoever, you shouldn't get a Vizsla.:)

That said, ours has done some treadmill training and he LOVES to chase and catch frisbees in the yard. But he goes nuts if he doesn't get to go tearing around the outdoors at least somewhat frequently. They are intelligent, very curious dogs, and they need mental stimulation, in addition to exercise -- ours doesn't care one bit for chasing balls, but guessing the trajectory of a frisbee and catching it in the air keeps him interested.

Of course, a couple kids might keep him interested, too.

Ditto ArmedBear's response.

If you have ANY doubt about giving a vizsla enough exercise, you won't give him enough exercise. Saying vizslas like exercise is like saying f-16s are fast.

Tanner gets an hour at the dog park in the morning.
And an hour at the dog park at night.
Hunting season for pheasant is 3-5 days per week in the field.

And he's never really worn down. Our longest day hunting last fall was 6 hours. Tanner was only about a year old, and still didn't want to leave after 6 hours.

Amazing dogs.

OTOH, there is nothing better than spending time with my dog, and I'm never worried about him wanting to go somewhere with me.

My g/f tells me at times that she wishes I loved her half as much as I do my dog. I tell her I wish she were half as cool as my dog is.

(I'm *mostly* joking......)

Michael- Beautiful dog!

Vizslas are a unique breed, too, both very affectionate, and very birdy. Can't just leave 'em in the yard.

I *wish* I had the time for a Viszla. Been wanting one ever since I saw one. But between work and school, I don't even have time for a cat.

Thanks everyone. You really just confirmed what I already knew. Like grimjaw said, I have wanted one ever since I saw one for the first time. I just know it wouldn't be a good fit for my life right now.

Well, son-in-law finally moved to the country where he can keep Ruger, the yellow lab he brought home beggin' me to keep. I sorta miss him, but don't miss the mess. He was getting out of tearing everything in sight up phase, though, getting mature. The back yard looks like France, "no man's land", 1914. I've got to start the rehabilitation of the St. Augustine, I guess.

Neat thing is, now HE feeds the mutt nightly and messes with him and I can just run by there and get him when I'm going duck hunting next season. :D He's got acres to play on out there and a better area to be tethered at night until we get him a kennel. I did most of his training. He's hunted with me 5 trips now, and doing well. Hope he remembers how next season. Out there where they moved, we'll be dove hunting, too. Ruger will get to work on doves, a good thing.

I have 2 male vizsla's. They are like living with a pro athlete. Haul ass and never tire till, they get into the house. Wouldn't own any other type of dog.
