Saw this piece in the Daily News today. What do y'all think?

NRA lobbying led to law that stopped CDC from using federal funds to study gun violence

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/funds-studies-gun-violence-article-1.1809263#ixzz338VrkrgF

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention receives no federal funding to study gun violence, thanks to a 1996 law the NRA succeeded in ramming through Congress. Now two lawmakers are sponsoring a bill to give the CDC $10 million a year to study why guns kill people.
Guns kill 32,000 Americans a year, but not one penny is given to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find out why.

Victims of gun violence can thank the National Rifle Association for squeezing off that funding.
The NRA began lobbying Congress in the 1990s to limit the CDC’s funding after the agency gave financial backing to an independent study that found that keeping a gun in the home was strongly associated with an increased risk of homicide.

The pro-gun behemoth succeeded in ramming legislation through in 1996 that forbade the CDC from using federal funds for studies that “advocate or promote gun control.”

Known as the Dickey Amendment for Rep. Jay Dickey (R-Ark.), who sponsored it, the bill didn’t outright ban gun research — but made it clear the CDC risked all its funding if it gave financial support to studies that might not suit the NRA’s agenda.

I don't think the CDC should attempt to gather data and offer conclusions on firearms related deaths in the country. There will always be a bias with the results because the only data they will analyze is from crimes and suicide. They can only publish results of firearms data that shows firearms in a negative light. They cannot include data on crime prevention or self-defense because no such data is systematically collected. Not all uses of firearms in self-defense is even reported. This is a blatant attempt by this administration to use yet another branch of the government to further its gun control agenda.

Nonsense. One of the 23 executive orders from December of 2012 to address gun control involved a CDC funded study, which was contracted to the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council and released June of last year. Not a single finding supported any of the administration's desired positions so Obama and friends never so much as let anyone know the study was even released. This was even a bigger failure than Clinton's study which tried to pin crime to assault weapons.

Study here for all to see

Yeah this sounds contrary to the "Obama ordered the CDC to prove gun control works, they found out it doesn't" studies that I heard about.

Sounds like more "NRA is killing our babies" nonsense when all the NRA does is promote gun safety and lobby for our constitutional rights.

"Now two lawmakers are sponsoring a bill to give the CDC $10 million a year to study why guns kill people."

I had always thought it was because when fired, the bullets poke holes in them.

I could probably prove it for not more than about $1 million.

I also think I could write better captions for the Daily News.

There are enough alphabet agencies trying to blame guns for crime already. Lets keep the Center for Disease Control studying DISEASES. I fail to see in any way why the CDC would be chosen to study crimes committed with firearms, or baseball bats, or fists, or anything else. Makes about as much sense as having the FDA do a study on traffic congestion.

^^^ I have wondered the same thing. I always thought studying crime was something the justice dept was supposed to do.

Idk why it takes 10 million/year to figure out why guns can be used to kill people:confused::banghead:

I'd gladly take their money and give them a live (or dead) demo on how it works:evil:

Idk why it takes 10 million/year to figure out why guns can be used to kill people

It doesn't. It takes a couple grand a year; the rest is to find people that can pick and choose and spin what bits and pieces they want to support what they're pushing.

The stripping of funds is a great victory for reason. The CDC began under liberal presidents to treat the use of guns in crime as if it were a disease. Note there was never ANY attempt to include other means of committing criminal violence. The idea was to try and get people to think of guns as a disease. Yet another cynical ploy by the forces of anti gun zealotry
