More years ago than I like to think about I had a loaned Daisy 177. Even then it was no powerhouse.

Looking at Cobalt's success with rebuilding classic Double Bee gun power plants I was wondering.....

Can one rebuild a Daisy 177 Targeteer? At home on the kitchen table with hand tools? are seals and springs and such available to fit the 177?

I note a common issue with the 177 is that the grips sort of curl away from the bottom of the grip frame with time. I was wondering if maybe heating them with a heat gun, or boiling them in water, would allow them to be shaped like horn? Maybe made flexible enough to duck tape down in position and leave a week or ten days to see if the plastic sets all nice and flat?

Thoughts?

Short answer, maybe.
Doing the work wont be the issue, it will be getting or making the seals. As long as the mechanicals still function properly, than even getting a replacement spring shouldn't be too hard, tho if you have get one made it maybe an expenses project.

As for heating and straightening the grips, while i think it's possible it will likely be pretty hard to get them to come out correctly. I wouldnt try it unless i had a spare on hand.

I'm interested, ive never seen one of those, so I'll probably do some research if i learn anything useful ill pass it along.

HERE is a link to Parts 2 and 3 of Tom Gaylord’s blog on the Targeteer. (Link to Part 1 is also there, but oddly there are no links to Parts 2 and 3 at Part 1...)

I never say never (haha), but after reading the as-issued Targeteer was good for ~115 fps MV, to get it up to even 200 fps MV might be asking too much. I’d imagine it could be coaxed into a little more velocity by shimming the spring a bit but I’ve never been inside one to know for sure.

I really like the shot tube the Targeteer uses (shown below)! Gotta be something cool it could be used for. What about a Daisy SBR? Or a handgun based on a shortened Model 104 (the grip could double as the cocking lever)? :D
