Hi guys .... unfortunately, the other day I dropped my DW 44 and bent the rear sight blade. It is now slightly canted to the left. It is still usable, but the sight picture leaves a lot to be desired and causes some vertical stringing on my targets.

So why don’t I just get it repaired or replaced?

I wasn’t real pleased with it to begin with. My vision is pretty sub-par, and the sight picture is so cramped under even ideal range conditions that i find myself really straining to get an adequate sight picture. I’ve tried hogging-out rear sight notches before with mixed results, so I don’t want to go there.

The real problem is that I have difficulty getting a good sight picture at dusk and early morning, making hitting a deer too much a matter of chance. I’ve tried painting the sites but it wasn’t much better.

I started asking myself why shooting a handgun really had to be this difficult, slow, un-instinctive, and tedious. I’ve tried bypassing the sights altogether, but my point-shooting results are too dismal to even quantify here.

So why not just get a red dot or a scope?

Because I like the short 4†barrel, and because I don’t want excess crap on top of my gun making it heavier, clumsier, and less holster-friendly. And I don't like having to flip a switch or batteries being too cold to work. In short, I want to find a way to shoot it but still keep it “handy†like a handgun ought to be. My dream is to have accuracy potential while getting a quick sight picture on my target ... oh, and I want to actually still be able to see my target somewhat.

Why not use a laser?

I would if anyone made LaserGrips for a DW. I’ve not been impressed with any other form of mounting a laser on a revolver.

This brings us to the topic of ghost rings ... does anybody make them for the Dan Wesson revolvers? I’ve done searches on Google to no avail, and DW’s website doesn’t mention having them.

What would be neat would be a double-ring ghost ring sight like JP Enterprises makes ... but then I don’t have a 1911, so how would I ever know. I’ve also thought about the Ashley express sights, but they don’t seem to make them for DW revos either. I’ve seen the “OneRaggedHole†website for Rugers as well.

If I have to make my own sight, well I'm not real handy and have no clue where to start. I’ve experimented a little and figured out the size aperture I would like to try, but it requires a much taller front sight. I would get around the oft exclaimed “obstructed target†complaint by making the aperture much bigger than usually found. Sure, my plan requires something really tall sitting on top of the frame’s rear, as well as a much taller front sight, but for now I just want to find something that allows me to hit at reasonable ranges. I’ll figure out the rest later.

Anybody have any ideas?
I might just sell the DW, despite liking it otherwise. The thought has occurred to me that I could get a Smith 629 and put Ashleys and LaserGrips on it and I might have what I want.

Thanks for hearing me rant everyone!
