I am starting to think real hard about a 10mm. I would like to get one on a 1911 platform.

Either Dan Wesson
Razorback or Pointman
or
Kimber

I own neither, Colt Delta Elite is my only 10mm. From what I have read, both Dan Wesson and Kimber make nice 10mm's. The Dan Wessons do not have a firing pin safety mechanism, whereas the Kimber uses the Swartz type firing pin block. I have read a lot of complaints about the Kimber's firing pin safety breaking and rendering the gun inoperable. I think the Kimber does use a fully supported chamber, ramped barrel, whereas the Dan Wesson uses a standard non-ramped barrel, so the Kimber might offer a little extra protection if nuclear loads are your goal.

Get a Razorback, if you can still find one.
Or wait for a commander length 10mm from Dan Wesson.
A visit to their site and lo, and behold, they have 10mm patriots now.
I own a Razorback (#151), and can't say enough good things about Razorbacks, or DW in general.

Sorry but the Razorback have been hit or miss with the 1911forum folks. And their sights just plain suck. Cheap Bo-Mars. And the cheap wood grips - plezzz. Dan Wesson is a custom shop that produces some fine guns. But these batches of RZs have had their problems.

White dots in sight falling out, FTF, FTE, guns not firing. Go over to 1911forum and read up. And if I remeber, they only ship one mag with the gun. Plezz. And the guns are filthy according to the reports when they ship. Which may be adding to their QC issues. If they cleaned the guns and lubed them at the factory, they would catch perhaps 30 % more defects before they leave the shop.

I applaud their effort and boy are they serving folks. The president himself is posting on 1911forum regulalrly. I like that. But they have to get their QC up. The guns are shipping with clearly parts that are not matching in fit or finish and they want $800 plus. I have handled four and have not been impressed with their consistency. Some of the stainless parts look almost bead blasted, some almost look bright polished, and some just standard lusterful stainless, so they guns have looked like parts guns in my neck of the woods. They had nice smooth triggers too.

C- on the finish.

And why get a Kimber Series II? The trigger just can't be smoothed out as well with all of the MIM parts and the Swartz type firing pin block. The Series Ones are preferred.

I don't know enough about the 10mm Kimbers toi comment but have seen several happy 9mm and 10mm Kimber customers with this last run. They may be added into the line permently. But you still are dropping $1K on the gun. And they do have plastic MSHs and trigger that need smoothing.

And forget the Colt Delta Elties. $750 for the gun and another $900 to upgrade the gun to current shooting preferences. And there still is a concern that even with the factory mods to the frames, that they still may crack. I've seen way too many abused/trashed CDEs with the woners asking even $600 for a gun that even needs to be hardchromed. So you may need four months to get it into shape and you may spend $150 just shipping around to the right gunsmiths and refinishing shops.

CDEs are nice for collectors but as a shooter, I've not been impressed. B- for collectors if mint but as a shooter D-

Another option, buy a used Kimber Custom in 40 cal stainless (series One) and just buy a $150 Ed Brown 10mm match barrel pre-fitted and spend $20 on some Wolff 20# variable power recoil springs and some shok buffs, and you will have a 10mm and 40 SW 1911. My local gunsmith will make sure the barrel is fit well for $25-50.

So for about $200, you can have that 10mm caliber in that 1911. And I use standard Chip McCormick 45 ACP magazines for 40SW and know they will work for 10mm. So I don't even need to buy more mags.

I have the Custom in 40 cal but just waiting to buy the Ed Brown 10mm barrel and accessories.

Already got the Novak adjustable sights, a metal arched checkered MSH, beavertail, trigger job, short trigger, and wood grips I want without getting another gun.

And you can find the Custom 40s for $500 used. I did:D

Two calibers, one quality gun.

I thought there was a timing problem with 1911 type .40 to 10mm conversions.
Well, what do I know.
Here's one thing.
My razorback did have a problem, but DW took care of it, paid shipping both ways, included an extra mag, and all in less than a week.
The fit/finish of mine is excellent, and and I like their revolvers as well, have one of those, too.
I bought a 10mm 1911 made from match grade components and paid $699 retail. I prefer it to my G20, and it will stay in my collection for some time to come.
That's just my first hand experience with DW.
I like the 1911 forums, and they are a great source of info, but no one place has a monopoly on truth.

I personally wouldn't buy a kimber for $5.00, but that's just one man's opinion.
Plastic MSH on a 10mm, really... what's next?
